I had a great time. I would love to see another day hike like this, since I don't have any camping gear yet!! It was fun

    January 2, 2014

  • john t.

do all of those hikes go through small caves?

    January 2, 2014

    • Amber J.

There were three tight spaces on the Wild Walk. I'm a bit claustrophobic and I made it through two of them without difficulty. There were alternate routes at each place that the Park Hosts took with anyone who chose to join them.

As always, great group. Just a little sad so much of the park was closed. But the hike of the beaten path was worth it.

For those that missed this great opportunity, (like me) the park is offering the hike multiple times in January.

The Penitentiary Hollow Tour is great. I'd love to have the time to spend a couple of days unattended touring those crags, caves, and terrain features. Very compelling, great way to spend Day One. Good to see everyone. The brewskis and burgers afterwards, stories, and all, made it a great day.

Camping tonight! For the other NYE campers, in which area are you camping? I'd like to meet up (no pun intended) with the group. and Miranda, I am not registered to go on the hike since I will bring my dog.

All the walks are full... Anyone going to camp just to camp?

    December 29, 2013

  • Amber J.

Have sick kids so no camping for me this time. :(
Determined to at least make it for the hike, though.
Any chance you guys might post the site(s) you end up at so some of us day-trippers can crash your pad and roast a mallow or two?

    December 31, 2013

  • Raymond

Okay Now planning for dinner for those that are staying.....

As tradition states you are suppose to have Cabbage and Black-eyed peas to start the New Year off and in observance with tradition yet worrying about the methane provided from Cabbage we will go with the Black-eyed pea option only unless someone can cook the cabbage....

I will make some black eyed peas in advance and then throw on the fire to finish up but for the remainder of the meal we have some choices to make.

Go to this survey and fill out your choices I will post the results afterwards.

    https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/W5D73MD

For dessert there is only one option.....fresh apple crisp with a coconut crumb topping. Sorry no ice cream unless someone wants to bring Dry Ice and a tub of Blue Bell Vanilla. Not sure if ice cream in a cooler packed with ice will stay firm enough for that long or will last with my kids in the car on the drive out there.

    December 20, 2013

    • JOSEPH L.

Maybe,we should invent an electric hammock.

      1 · December 26, 2013

    • Raymond

Create a still use tubing in the hammock to condence the suoerheated steam and make shine while you camp amd cook out

      1 · December 26, 2013

  • Amber J.

I'm on the west side, so I will definitely do Mineral Wells.
Would love to go camp the night before but depends on kids' NYE plans...

    December 22, 2013

    • Clif E.

    Hello, all!
I just called the park to get some more information.
The guided hike, led by a park interpreter, begins at **2PM**. It will last about two hours, is probably not dog friendly, and will involve crawling/climbing/getting dirty. Bringing water is recommended--carrying a camera not so much.
Reservations are required. There is a limit of 20; I was the fifth to sign up. [This is for Lake Mineral Wells State Park.]
Other area parks are having something similar. The link above (main post) will take you to a list.
This one is specific to LMWSP:
    http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/calendar/first-day-hike-penitentiary-hollow-wild-walk
Or call (940)[masked] and press 8 to get a person.

They will be taking us through some areas usually not open to the public.
    I'm super-excited!
