Hiking at Eisenhower State Park

There have been requests for combination day hike trips with optional camping, so I am posting some here. This is the hiking portion. Camping trip is here: http://meetu.ps/27LVsK

Feel free to just come and hike or stay after to spend time by the fire and socialize with the awesome people in this group.

We will do the entire 3.7 mile hike shown in this PDF (Ike's + Armadillo Hill).  For those that want to do more, you can then do a round-trip back on that trail, or head down to the lake and hike along the shore (which is often more strenuous): http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/park_maps/pwd_mp_p4503_0032p.pdf

I will lead it in reverse per the map (starting at either marker 14 or 11, depending on group turn-out). So let's meet at the overflow camping area near the playground where there should be enough parking this time of year. The trail is one way, so we may need to arrange for some cars at the end where the campsites are to ferry back if desired.

For those looking for some back-packing training opportunity, feel free to load up your packs and wear them on this hike.

**** As part of the associated camping trip for this event, we are having a potluck dinner on Saturday at 7p. Even if not camping, feel free to bring something already made or be prepared to cook and come join the fun after the hike! ****

My rough headcount (give or take a couple) was 45. So yes, that was a great turnout. Thanks everyone and hope to see you all again soon.

I just want to tell ya'll about a great website & app for all kinds of outdoor equipment and clothing etc.
steepandcheap.com I'm addicted and have gotten some great deals over the past 4 years! Great buys on men & women's outerwear for the next day & 10 hours, women's casual clothing for 2 days & 10 hours, Women's buyers' pick and grab bag under $15 for the next 10 hours. tons of hiking boots, running shoes, sandals, smart wool socks, etc. too. I just bought a sleeping mat.

Are you all camping again tonight?

    February 15, 2014

    • Kib R.

There are at least 19 camping again tonight from last night, then I think another 5. Three are plenty of sites

      February 15, 2014

  • Chris P.

My brother would like to bring his son. How many kids come out to the event?

    February 15, 2014

Is this a dog friendly hike?

    February 14, 2014

    • Kib R.

Yes, dogs are allowed if on leash per park regulations. As for me, I just ask that if bringing a dog you know for sure your dog is good around kids and other dogs.

      February 14, 2014

  • Jeff

I am new to Dallas, and was looking for something to do with my daughters this weekend to enjoy the weather...really looking forward to meeting folks and getting to enjoy a good hike. Will the hike start right at 1? Also, do I need a reservation on the camping event if I just want to come up that morning, cook lunch (either fire pit or grill) and then go on the hike? Thanks in advance for any info.

    February 11, 2014

    • Jason

I have a 5 year old girl also but not this weekend so it's just me this time. She had a blast with Kib's boys and Amber's kids.she'll be with me at Mission Tejas, if I can share a site.

      February 11, 2014

    • Jeff

Awesome, Barb. My girls love new friends so that will be so fun! Jason, I will look at the mission tejas info and see if we can make that.

I hiked most of the trail on Saturday in late afternoon, from post 1 near the park entrance to the point and back. The trail was in pretty good shape but kind of muddy in many places. Be sure and bring spare shoes for the ride home.

    February 10, 2014

    • Kib R.

Thanks for the update Jim. Hopefully with the weather change we are supposed to see tomorrow it will help improve that further. But from my experience too, there are parts that just seem to always be a little muddy due to the location and shade. How long did it take you?

      February 11, 2014

    • Jim A

About 2:15 I didnt take any breaks other than few minutes at the cliffs I measured that part at 5.7 miles round trip. Looks like I wont be able to make it this weekend, my daughter's birthday party was rescheduled for Saturday

      February 11, 2014

  • Diane L.

Is 3.7 miles the longest hike that can be done? I need to do a hike 2 to 3 times that far.

    1 · February 9, 2014

    • Kib R.

The 3.7 miles is 1-way, and we will have options for parking cars at end and doing one-way (so kids and those that can't do more yet can bale), and then round-trip for the rest. If you want, like David was so kind to point out (LOL), you can do more laps. Don't forget, that is just the trail system. You can also head down to the lake and hike along the shore adding more distance and difficulty in terrain. I am sure that some from the group may even end up wanting to go with you, so you can make this as long as you have time for.

      February 10, 2014

    • Elaine

Diane, If you do long hikes, I will come and follow your lead.

Anyone interested in carpooling from North Dallas area?

    1 · February 10, 2014

I will bring my dog. She likes to walk and socialize.

    February 9, 2014

  • Nethra N.

I would love to join just for the hiking part of it. Do I need to bring anything along?

    February 5, 2014

    • Kib R.

Nethra, go ahead and RSVP to this event and come along for this hike. Just wear proper footwear and bring enough water and any snacks you might want.

      February 5, 2014

    • Nethra N.

Awesome! Will be looking forward to this hike. Thank you Kib.

      February 6, 2014

  • Joanne

Anyone want to carpool to the hike?

    February 5, 2014

  • David

Dropped out, but might get a break and sign back up later next week, depending on how things go...not in total control of my schedule at the moment...

    February 5, 2014

  • Christopher

I might go. Can I bring my dog?

    February 5, 2014

    • Kib R.

Yes, dogs are allowed on the trails. The park requirements state that a leash is required.

      February 5, 2014

  • Barb

Is this a kid allowed event on this particular campout?

    February 2, 2014

    • Barb

      Oooops sorry. My bad. :-)

      February 4, 2014

    • Kib R.

No problem Barb, hope to see you at both events!

      February 5, 2014

  • Christopher

Sounds awesome! I may need to plan for this

    February 5, 2014

  • Jen R.

Looking forward to this! Hope I can keep up

    February 3, 2014

    • Kib R.

Jen, this is a leisure hike (read, kids are coming), so you should be fine. Just come on out to enjoy the company of some great people and decent scenery. I have to say decent instead of great because, well, it is still winter, so a little too brown.

      February 4, 2014

  • Jason L.

    Is the camper or tents?

    January 10, 2014

    • Kib R.

This event is for the hike we are doing on Saturday for those that don't want to stay the night but still want to "sign up" and come enjoy the park and people. If you are looking for the camping event, where you can choose to bring a camper instead of a tent, that is here: http://www.meetup.com...

      January 10, 2014

    • Ellen

But also, Jason, you can bring your tent to the camping. Lots of people will be bringing tents and "heaters" since there is electric and water at the sites.

      January 28, 2014

  • Grace B.

If we're not planning on camping there on February 14th, where should we meet the rest of the group?

    January 10, 2014

    • Kib R.

Great question. The event has been updated with the answer. Basically, the overflow camping area where there is more parking and 2 access points to the trail system.

      January 10, 2014

  • Joanne

This sounds great. Are we going to carpool to the park?

    January 8, 2014

    • Kib R.

I will already be there as my boys and I are camping there all weekend. But you are more than welcome to arrange something.

Hi Kib, I'd be very interested if it's on Sunday 2/16, and I have to be back in town by 5pm. Is that a possibility? Thank you!

    January 7, 2014

    • Kib R.

I will be camping there for 2 nights, so will still be there on Sunday. If there is enough interest, I could possibly post a second event for people to sign up for on Sunday morning, but I usually don't stay past noon on the 3rd day of camping.

      January 9, 2014

  • Karen

    Strong maybe.
