Hiking at Cedar Ridge Preserve

There have been requests for combination day hike trips with optional camping, so I am posting some here. This is the hiking portion.

Feel free to just come and hike or head back to Cedar Hill State Park to spend time by the fire and socialize with the awesome people in this group.

Remember to bring sun screen, water, and snacks if you need them.  This will be a family and dog friendly hiking trip and we will try to split the group accordingly to accomodate this.

This was the first "real" hike for me and "may" be the last one of this magnitude - lol. But with that said, THANK YOU, Kib for a great hike. You are a great organizer.

Anyone in the Far North Dallas area wanna carpool?

    February 28, 2014

I live in far north Plano off 121, would be interested in carpooling.

Is there parking for 70 cars there? Don't forget the support the Cedar Ridge Preserve with a small donation at the drop box.....

    2 · February 26, 2014

    • Kib R.

Thanks Scott for pointing this out. I just counted and there are 65 official parking spots, then space for another 12-16. Also, the recommended donation is $3. I did not know that as we were trying to determine where this hike would be. So please bring cash for the donation box so we can continue to have such a wonderful place to visit.

They accept online donations, if anyone is interested.

It looks like this will fit into my schedule. I love Cedar Ridge Preserve, it's my favorite place to hike in the Metroplex. That said, I'd love the excuse to try the trails inside Cedar Hill SP. Any time I head that direction, I always just go to Cedar Ridge, since I know I love it. :) But wherever we end up hiking, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I've heard some good things about the Duck Pond-Talala Trail in the park.

How do I find this meetup group at the site? Is there a number I can call?

    1 · February 24, 2014

    • Kib R.

The easiest way is to look for about 20-30+ people all standing around in a group, then ask 1 if they are part of NTO. We are hard to miss.

      February 25, 2014

  • Kib R.

So, we now have about 65 people signed up, that is fantastic! And, if anything like a week ago at Eisenhower, we could have a large turnout from this group. I would like to ask for a couple volunteers that know the trails that can help me lead this event. I will bring radios and would like to have someone in the front, possibly middle, and definitely the back. Thank you.

Just getting back from Mexico the day before, but if there are no unforeseen consequences from my trip, then I will join you at Cedar Hill. Looking forward to seeing it for the first time.

Do the Nature Preserve. Never hiked it but have ridden the DORBA trails. A large group of hikers, especially with kids and dogs is not a good thing on the bike trails. Especially when the dog dodges one way and the owner dodges the opposite direction leaving a leash stretched across the trail as a biker is barreling down.

    February 20, 2014

  • Leigh

Unfortunately, I will not be able to go. I am looking forward to seeing pics though!

    February 19, 2014

  • Della M.

Do Cedar Ridge Preserve so you don't have to worry about the mountain bikes. Especially with the amount of people that are signed up. If you need help with the hike due to the number of folks signed up, let me know.

I've hiked all the trails at Cedar Hill SP / Cedar Ridge Preserve / and Dogwood Canyon. Dogwood Canyon is closer, but it's also a very short trail. Cedar Ridge Preserve outstrips all the others when it comes to hiking (IMO). I LOVE Cedar Ridge and spend as much time there as I can.

You can also walk across the dam - it is not a hike just a long walk - if you go all the way across to the Oasis marina (they have a restroom in the parking lot) and back it is about 8/9 miles. Can be accessed from Shady Ridge area / Overlook Trail.

    1 · January 31, 2014

I have done both. I love Cedar Ridge Preserve! If you hike all trails, you can probably get in 9-10 miles. I have also hiked Big Cedar (Dorba Trail). These trails are extensive, but the downside is having to watch out for sudden mountain bike appearances which would not be a problem at the Preserve.

    1 · January 30, 2014

I've been hiking the Preserve every almost every weekend in the past month. The trails are well marked, and the map is easy to follow. I'm planning on trying to make this outing depending on my schedule. : )

Hi - If you wanted to stay in the park without worrying about bikes - the Duck Pond-Talala loop in Cedar Hill State park is about 4 miles. I agree the Cedar Ridge Preserve is nicer, has more extensive trails, and provides more options.

    Are dogs welcome?

    January 30, 2014

    • Kib R.

According to the park map dogs are afford if on leash. So if your dog is friendly around other dogs, adults, and kids, feel free to bring along.

The Cedar Ridge Nature Preserve is very nice and has some good trails of varying lengths without having to dodge bikes.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
