CANCELLED Kayak from Sandy Lake to Sam Houston Park and California Crossing

The new California Crossing dam with new boat ramps is finally finished! We will celebrate this new paddler friendly launch site, and the advent of spring, by taking a two tiered trip that will start out a The Trinity River Kayak Co. http://www.trinityriverkayak.com/ on Sandy Lake Rd , paddle to Sam Houston Park, (aprox 5 miles) stop for lunch (and to let any tired or beginner paddlers catch the shuttle), then, for those up to the challenge of another 6 miles, continue on to the California Crossing Dam and brand new boat ramps. The Trinity River Kayak Co. will supply a shuttle to bring everyone back to their shop where we will be able to enjoy their campfire and have dinner off the grill.
This trip is designed for both beginner and advanced paddlers. Boat rentals are available for anyone who does not have a boat or who just wants to try a different boat.
Shuttle $15
Boat rental (shuttle included) $36
You can pay in advance to Trinity River Kayak Co. or pay when you arrive, but Jeff would like an idea of how many boats may be needed and how many people he will be shuttling. This is a custom trip, built just for us, not one of the trips normally available to customers, at a special price for our meetup group.

When you RSVP please let me know if you plan to do the entire trip, or think you will want to stop at Sam Houston. We will, of course, let anyone who is tired take the shuttle back from Sam Houston.

Bring:
Lunch, (or buy one at the shop before we go) Plenty of water, sunscreen, (even in spring the sun can cause burns)
If you are bringing your own boat and equipment remember that PFD’s are required for everyone.

The event was cancelled but several intrepid and determined folks showed up (you know who you are) so we did the first part of the run as far as Sam Houston. It was cold and the water was running at about 1500cfs so it was too dangerous to go to California Crossing (we did drive over to look, and only skilled kayakers would have been able to make the take-out ramp without risk of getting swept over the dam and caught in the hydro.) We were protected from the wind for the most part, but it was still windy enough that I was glad it was mostly at our backs. I will reschedule for Sunday March 30. Watch for it.

If I had known Trinity River kayak Co was still running and others had showed I would have been there. Dressed and loaded for cold weather kayaking, I was determined to get on the water so played around on white capped Lake Arlington instead.

So sorry. It was a decision made only because people showed up determined to get wet no matter what, and the short run was safe for a small group.

  • Teresa

I am CANCELLING this due to the extreme wind and cold and the fact that we have so many beginners. I will reschedule for a better day. Please call if you have any questions. [masked]

I think my plus one and I are signed up through a different meetup group. See y'all there!

    March 14

    • Teresa

Yes you and your plus 1 are confirmed on the DFW Adventurers site. There are three meetup groups involved, this one, DFW Adventurers, and DFW Paddlesports.

Don't think I can make it unless someone gives me an idea on a repair. Today while taking my NEW (only used once) thousand dollar kayak off the rack, it fell and hit the sharp part of a dolly. This sliced the kayak through the hull which is made of Made of Gen2 polyethylene. Any ideas on how to repair this thing?

Craig, I thought really hard about. I hate to say no to first event when I asking to get out and do more. But, I'm so tired of the cold. It's going to be cold and windy on sunday and you'll be over water. I just cannot do it. When It's 80 outside. YES.

On the water on the river you won't feel the wind or the cold. The tree line and bank cut out most of the wind.

Well, have always enjoyed canoing etc. Hope they have 2-3X size vests It's been a while and know I will be sore afterwards but this sounds fun. Only hope the weather works with us... Will go for the gusto long haul..

    • Teresa

We will be down in the river channel, so even if it is windy it won't affect us much. And, so long as you bring a waterproof jacket, the 10-20% chance of rain in the forecast shouldn't be a big deal either. Also, if you prefer a canoe, they have those as well.

Hope folks won't be in a race here....maybe next trek ...

    March 13

    • Teresa

Dan, there will be a lot of beginners as well as advanced. We have enough people that we will be doing groups, and there will be slow groups and fast groups. If you show up early enough to go with the first group, I guarantee that it will be a leisurely group because the fellow leading it likes to take his time.

I am RSVPd through DFW Adventurers already before I saw it on here.

    March 12

    • Teresa

It is all the same trip. Better to only RSVP on one just so it is easier for me to keep the numbers straight.

      March 12

  • Craig

I plan on doing the entire trip. Tried to book online but didn't find a description of our route. So Paying when I arrive is the next option. I'm also bringing my own kayak and gear.

    March 11

    • Teresa

Most people will pay when they get there. Our route is custom, as is our shuttle fee (discounted) so it is not listed. You can call the shop and pay in advance if you want. But I have you on the list.
