Lake Tawakoni State Park - Tour Texas! ★

White Deer Reach camping loop.  Water & electric sites are available at $20 per night.

Monthly car-camping adventure touring Texas' State Parks. Bring kids, dogs, and everything that will fit in the car.

Lake Tawakoni State Park is east of Dallas.  This event is in conjunction with a guided fishing trip organized by +1 (Scott Michnavich).

--------------------------------------------

It's car camping, so bring your luxury items. Big tent, big bag, and lots of good food. Campfire games and adult beverages are always welcome. Just remember to put your beverage in an alternate container. State parks have a strict 'no public consumption of alcohol' policy.

You can reserve a campsite on Texas Parks and Wildlife's website, however, they will not allow you to reserve a particular primitive site. You'll be asked your preference of site when you check in at the park. Consider sharing a ride and a camping site with another NTO-er.

The first person to check in should post their site number on this meetup page under the comments after checking in, that way we can all get sites near one another.

Firewood gathering is prohibited in all Texas State Parks. Please bring firewood so we may continue our tradition of awesome NTO campfires.

The itinerary for these Tour Texas! adventures is standard:

Friday:
3:00 - 7:00 Early Bird check-in and camp set up
7:00 - 9:00 Dinnertime
9:00 - ? Campfire Fun

Saturday:
7:00 - 9:00 Camp Breakfast
9:00 - 5:00 Latecomer Camp Setup & Park Exploration
5:00 - 7:00 Dinnertime
7:00 - ? Campfire Fun

Sunday:

    October 19

    • Della M.

We potluck like a boss in NTO. If it weren't for your fish slaying, we wouldn't have had the awesome fish fry. And the pancakes were the bomb. See you next time.

      October 19

  • Rachel f.

Great meetup! We'll be talking about the fish that was caught & cooked up for a long time!

    October 19

It was a unique treat indeed. It was awesome to see you again Rachel. Singing along with Greg to the Beatles was so much fun.

    October 19

    • Della M.

It was fun to see so many people again. And the weather was awesome. The chicken dutch oven meal was awesome. We're doing another RV-friendly event in December on the 5th. If you can make it out, we'd love to have you.

      October 19

  • Randall O.

great time! perfect weather! big group of friendly folks! the fish fry, then singing around the campfire- perfect!

    October 19

It was really nice weather, I paid extra for that. Thanks for accommodating us at your site for the potluck, glad the raccoons didn't raid what was left!

Ellen, if you have a min if not no worries, could you please let me know how many kids there are to make sure I bring enough smores ingredients? I'll bring extra for interested adults like myself :-)

Not sure yet. I know there are at least 8 that I know of.

      October 17

  • Elaine M.

I also reserved a site and won't be able to attend. The front desk knows I can't keep my reservation and will make it available to any NTOer who might need one. Friday nite is paid, Sat is not. The site is reserved under Marie Moore. This is going to be such a beautiful weekend! I hate to miss out but you guys have a great time!

    October 17

  • Wes

I also have room at my site it's just myself and one tent so far.

    October 17

    • Laura

Wesley (#1) :-). I just messaged you the rez details. Let me know if you didn't get them.

      October 17

  • Jill M.

hey all, so camp breakfast means we all get together and bring our breakfast stuff for cooking? How does that work? I can bring coffee - the most important part of my day! I will have pulled pork for sandwiches for dinner Sat. nite.

    October 13

    • Ellen

Oh - and yuck on the coffee (just kidding), but I don't drink it myself - lol.

      October 14

    • Della M.

Don't usually do a breakfast potluck. We got early birds and late risers so its hard to coordinate breakfast. But dinner is a slam dunk.

      October 17

  • Princess

My two camping partners will not be able to make it this weekend. I have room for one small tent. Let me know if you are interested. I will not get there until about 6 o'clock.

    October 17

  • Laura

I have a site reserved but won't be able to attend. If someone needs it you can PayPal me the deposit I've already paid. Otherwise I'll cancel the rez.

    October 16

    • Wes

Laura , how much do I owe you?

      October 17

    • Laura

Wesley, I just sent you a message. The sites are $20.00/night.

      October 17

  • Jason

Decided to go to the garage sale first. We'll be there Saturday afternoon. See y'all then.

    October 15

    • Ellen

Garage sale over camping - NOT!

      October 16

    • Jason

It's the REI garage sale, absolutely! And I don't even "need" anything.

      October 16

  • Della M.

Potluck plan: We eat at 7:00 pm Saturday night. Not sure which site, but you'll know when it happens.

Please post what you're bringing. Plates and plasticware are welcome.

I'll probably be the first to arrive- around noon on Friday. Is anyone coming from the Arlington area?

    October 16

    • Craig

Yes. Norma and I will leave Arlington around 11 or so on Friday.

      October 16

    • Ellen

We won't be leaving until probably around 2:00 (my plan any how).

      October 16

  • Randall O.

The park ranger is going to give a demonstration of camp fire building techniques, Saturday 5pm at the Spring Point Trailhead firepit.

    1 · October 16

    • +1

Campfire techniques? I thought NTO policy was to just throw everything that wasn't staked down in to the fire. Also bigger is better

      October 16

    • Craig

Saturday the astronauts on the International Space Station look down at an orange flickering glow emanating from north east Texas and think, "Must be Scott building a camp fire."

      4 · October 16

  • +1

For the potluck Saturday night, I will be frying up fresh fish with hushpuppies that we caught on the NTO fishing trip.

    4 · October 15

  • Wes

I plan on coming but don't have a site. If anybody has a room for 1 tent, 1 person that would be great.

    October 14

    • Ellen

Wesley - Stacy has a site to share. But truly everyone come on. There will be somewhere to put up a tent (especially since we aren't limited to two tents per site).

      October 14

  • Randall O.

I just confirmed with the park ranger- we can have as many tents on each site as we want, just no more than eight people per site.

    October 14

  • Randall O.

Different parks have different rules and this one does allow 3 tents per site. They have designated tent pads but you are not limited to placing your tent(s) on those pads. I'll do my own breakfast thing and join your Sat. night potluck dinner.

    1 · October 14

  • Clete P.

Would love to join but no sites available... any suggestions??

    October 7

    • Bob

The number of tents and/or type of camper/RV is selected when the reservation is made. For tents, there's only the option to select 1 or 2 per site. The other consideration is parking. While there's no explicit limit to the number of cars per camp site the practical limit is probably about two cars per site on average plus a limited number of overflow parking spots sprinkled around the white deer loop. There's also a parking lot near the boat ramp but I would recommend checking to see if overnight parking is allowed there.

      October 13

    • Ellen

All TX State Parks allow 2 vehicles per site, then charge an extra vehicle fee of usually $2-$3 per vehicle over that. Generally the overflow parking spots does allow overnight parking with a sticker in your window that shows you have paid.

      October 14

  • jemy m.

I will bring brats and gourmet sausages along with buns and condiments

    October 13

  • Randall O.

Anyone who wants to join us should just show up- we can have as many tents as necessary on each site (8 people per site limit) and out of 60 probably only 45 will actually show.

    October 11

    • Ellen

For sure! And so far burn ban is lifted!

      October 11

    • Ellen

Forecast: High 50's at night (GREAT sleeping weather) and low 80's during the day. What more could you ask for!!!

I will be doing something in the dutch oven. Hopefully chicken breasts and potatoes, but maybe ???

    October 13

Geocaching at Lake Tawakoni! There are 15 caches at the park. Anyone can join the adventure so here is my plan. Saturday get up about 7AM (sun rises about 7:25) eat breakfast, load up water and a lunch and ride mountain bikes to Red Oak trail head. Spend however long it takes to ride the trail and gather the 7 geocaches. That evening after supper (no set time yet sun sets about 7:08), gather water and head lamps then drive to the parking area to the Spring Point trail head. Hiking this trail we can gather the 5 caches in that area under the cover of darkness. There are 2 caches on the White Deer trail close to our camping area for those willing to stay up late to go after those. And we can't forget one by the foot bridge. For those doing the State Park Geocache Challenge, there is one of those in this park.

    1 · October 5

    • Della M.

Craig is the geocache king. He even has custom goodies. Caching with him is a lot of fun.

I just reserved a site. Currently, there is a burn ban in all of the counties surrounding Tawakoni so check with the park office before the event before you bring the fixins for smores! I thought I would make home-made ice cream for the Saturday night pot luck dinner.

    September 25

    • Ellen

Surely there will be enough rain between now and then to lift the ban!!!

    Hello,
I just made my reservation for my best friend and I to join you all for the camping fun.
My problem is, there was only one campsite left and for only the night of Friday October 17th.
I was told an opening may become available but, may not.
I'm wondering if we are not able to get our site or any site for Saturday night if, we could pop up our little tent with someone else at their campsite?
Thank you so much for any help or information you can send my way.
