Memorial Weekend Campout/ Cookout

Join us Memorial weekend for a group campout/ barbeque on a 31 acre wooded and secluded property 30 miles east of Dallas. This is a guaranteed more peaceful setting than any state park- no ear plugs are required! You'll be surrounded by old growth hardwoods, creeks, ponds, trails and wildlife. You can swim, fish, ride bikes, hike and rope swing over the rear pond if you dare. There are plenty of fun things to do for the kids too- the tire swing, crazy swing, mini bikes, archery, etc. You can camp near my home or seclude yourself back in the jungle. The cost is free, the rules are minimal-bury your waste, pack out your garbage, don't pee in my ponds. I will provide the smoked brisket for a pot luck dinner, in my home Saturday night. Everyone is welcome but parking large groups can be a challenge so plan on car-pooling.

Here's a list of stuff left behind: two folding chairs, one ray gun water pistol, one Hello Kity towel, one tupperware container and a one quart skillet. Ellen, I have not found your hanging water container.

    • Ellen

Randall I did find the water container. Is one of the folding chairs red? I have a red one missing from one of the two last campouts.

I went off on my own & although I hadn't planned it that way, it was such a blessing. I hope to meet more of you next time! Thank you Rand for helping me push through my fears & overcome some of the blockages in my life. Everything happens for a reason & I'm now ready to move on with my life. I think everyone took something different away with them. For me it was personal growth & proving to myself I was going to be okay. Thank you!

I do hope everyone pitched in with $'s donation. Randall and Arie had a LOT of expense and did a lot of work to make this a weekend to remember. THANKS again, my boys and I all had a GREAT time.

Randall, by chance did I leave my water bag there hanging? I haven't located it yet in my "stuff".

This was the biggest and best group of people of any event I’ve ever had. Over 65 showed up over the course of the weekend! To have that many enjoying my property, well that's as good as it gets. It was a thrill to have so many first time campers and first time 'meetupers'. We all start off as strangers so the opportunity to bring so many good people together and help create so many new friendships and great memories is a real honor. Thank you all for coming, for respecting my property and all of your contributions.

There seems to be some confusion regarding pot luck dinner etiquette. I've had people show up with nothing. They were not invited back. Bring a bag of chips or a bottle of booze but bring real food too- salads, vegetables, your favorite casserole. Bring enough to feed everyone in your party +2. Bring serving dishes, trivets and serving utensils. I will provide the brisket, honeysuckle tea, paper plates and plastic ware. I have three ovens, two cook tops (no microwave) and an outside electrical plug you can use. I will not have refrigerator space available for others.

    May 22, 2014

Any ideas on how people can stay clean? I was wondering if there was a shower or bath alternative during the stay.

    May 20, 2014

    • Ellen

FYI - WalMart has the shower bags (that you hang to heat up in the sun) for $9.49 - so a cheap way to take a quick shower.

      May 21, 2014

    • Andrea C.

I think both Ellen and I will have one of these camp showers and can probably share if needed.

      May 22, 2014

  • Randall O.

The national weather forecast indicates that Sunday could see a 20% chance of rain, Monday, a 40% so here's the deal-the property is dry right now and you can drive to your campsite, unload and then move your vehicle to one of three designated parking areas. Only one of these areas is 'paved'. If it starts raining hard, everyone in the 'unpaved' areas has got to move their cars onto the county road- quickly. I'm at the end of a dead end road so no one will care but it's imperative since wrecker service to pull you out is expensive. I doubt if it’s going to be a problem but if we do get slammed with a lot of rain you will have to carry your gear out to your car.

    May 21, 2014

  • Randall O.

There is a outside cold water shower behind my house that guests can use. There's no privacy screen but you can figure out how to get clean without flashing anyone. My good friend Arie covered the $95!! cost of the porta potty and I have spent $150 for mowing, $40 for brisket, etc. etc. so we will have tip jars available for much appreciated contributions.

    May 21, 2014

  • Randall O.

A few people have asked about guns and dogs. I've never allowed hunting on my property and there will be way too many people for target shooting. No dogs over 30 lbs. and if your dog presents a threat to my little dog, the kids, the wildlife or the tranquilty of my property you will be asked to leave.

    May 21, 2014

  • Randall O.

OK girls, I'll have a porta potty delivered this week. With a 60 person RSVP list from several Meetup sites we should have at least 30-40 show up. If the property is wet or there is rain in the forecast parking will be a challenge so check these postings before you head out.

There is a fire pit large enough for cooking, etc. but I don't have much split fire wood.

    May 18, 2014

You're not the only one with kids. Should be a handful around that same age.

      1 · May 19, 2014

  • Randall O.

Kids are welcome- just keep an eye on them. If your kid wandered off here he might be lost for some time. Kids can swim and rope swing but only with parental supervision.

    1 · May 18, 2014

Randall - Is there a fire pit for both cooking and sitting around? So a need to bring firewood or not?

I am willing to split it with people to rent the port a potty

    May 14, 2014

  • Michael M.

My status says +2 but actually +4 boys under age of 13. I'm looking forward to it. Please let us know if you decide to rent the porta-potty. We would certainly prefer to contribute to a donation jar than pack out our own "droppings".

    May 14, 2014

    • Ellen

Going to be a mess of boys under the age of 13 - Yippee!!!

      1 · May 14, 2014

  • Randall O.

Of course your friends are welcome but you need to car pool as much as you can. It sounds like we are going to have a big turn out so check these postings before you head out-we will have seriously limited parking if the property is wet or there is a high likelihood of rain.

I would love to have an outdoor worship service one morning if I can find someone to preside

    May 5, 2014

    • Ellen

I'll second the outdoor worship service!

      May 5, 2014

    • Ellen

I am sure we would not mind being his "guinea pigs" and letting him "practice" on us if he was willing to.

      May 5, 2014

  • Randall O.

Tracy, If Ellen loans you a tent and I loan you a sleeping pad and bag your equipment needs will be minimal.

    April 27, 2014

    • Ellen

Tracy, if you need me to bring the tent it doesn't take much space and I will, so just let me know. If anyone else needs a tent, I have a 2nd PINK tent

      April 28, 2014

    • Ellen

This "offer" of a loaned tent is for anyone. I actually have two of the PINK tents. But I would have to know ahead of time so that I can pull them out.

      May 5, 2014

  • Randall O.

Ellen, of course your puppy is welcome but I have to put restrictions on larger dogs. I’ve got a 12 lb. Yorkie and a 12 year old daughter that I am very protective of so here’s my dog policy- NO dogs over 30 lbs., if your dog presents a threat to my dog, the kids, the wildlife or the tranquility of my property you will be asked to leave. Pet owners should realize that this is a densely forested area with lots of wildlife looking for a meal. Keep your pets close at hand.

I appreciate your portapotty suggestion. Sounds like a good idea.

    April 27, 2014

    • Ellen

Cool, thanks Randall - the only threat my "Yorkie/Schnauzer" pup will be is if you let her get too close to your face, she will give you lots of puppy kisses. I will keep her with us at all times. She does well on the leash and being carried.

      April 28, 2014

    • Ellen

Not sure what I was thinking - "Lilly" is a Shih Tzu/Schnauzer pup.

      April 28, 2014

  • Ellen

Randall - I have RSVP'd us, but it only allows for a +2 and I am a +3. I guess I should ask about pets? I have a small pup (guessing she weighs about 2-3 pounds at the moment). She goes everywhere we do (camping and all). Is that okay? Please let me know. Thanks.

    April 27, 2014

  • Randall O.

There will be no porta- potties since they cost about $80 for the weekend. I could charge a small amount to each visitor to cover it but, if I charged anything, it would be considered a business and I would have to get commercial liability insurance. For smaller events guests have access to my mud room toilet but larger crowds could easily overwhelm my septic system and cause me a lot of grief. So, it's dig a hole or bring your own toilet (as cheap as $12) and pack it out.

    April 24, 2014

    • Ellen

Randall - have you ever thought about putting up the porta-potty and putting a "donation" jar to fund it. I am pretty sure it could be easily funded that way and then no "business". Just a thought.

      April 27, 2014

  • Tracy

I want to go but I'm not yet equipped with camping supplies. Soon.. Soon...

    April 27, 2014

    • Ellen

Tracy - there are lots of us that have extras that we don't mind loaning out. I for one have an extra couple of tents. They are PINK, but they are about a 3-man/woman tent. They hold two cots with space in between.

      April 27, 2014

  • Luke & Tiffany C.

I have another couple wants to join us, I sign in as +2 but actually 4 of us is that ok?
