Diamond Hunting Labor Day Weekend at Lake Ouachita State Park

Camping and a trip to look for diamonds.

FRIDAY: Drive out, set up camp, enjoy the park.  Possibly rent kayaks or swim. This park also has party boat rentals!

SATURDAY: Drive to nearby Crater of Diamonds State Park and hunt diamonds. Traditional NTO Saturday evening potluck!

SUNDAY: Whatever we like in the area.

MONDAY: Drive home.

To make site reservations[masked]

There were several hike in spots left ... very close to the parking area so hike-in in this case only means you get a view of the water.

This park is has everything. In the way of nature that is.

Anyone willing to RSVP long enough to get this event announced and RSVP by someone else ??? Want to get sufficient exposure and out of the suggestion section. Then you could change it to not attending.

We had a great time! Really great to get away from Dallas and meet such great people!

Driving home took Rt.70 west to Rt. 41 south. First time thru there- crossed the Little Missouri River. Star of West campground there to the south. An abandoned gas station to the right. Shut down when gas .99 cents! I read the Little Missouri River a great kayak river with rapids heading north to Rt. 84. Figured everyone already knows this but river looks winding and it's 29 miles from Lake Greeson to a spot north. I looked at it on Google map and saw lots of outcroppings on river.

Enjoyed this past Labor Day weekend. First time meeting everyone in group and had a good time. Now can say have been hunting diamonds at the Crater of Diamonds mine. Thanks for setting this up!

On a side note, if your planning a return trip: I checked out a couple camp grounds before I headed back to Dallas and Joplin Point was awesome. Most of the sites are water front and since the point protruded so far out into the lake it was nice and breezy, perfect for summer/fall.

62 is still open and if someone still needs a spot after that, I can move my small tent to make room in 63.

Hi Pat - thank you for organizing all of the campsites! My friend and I will be arriving possibly around 1am on very early Saturday morning. Which number camp site has room for us? Just want to know where to go if everyone is already asleep.

I'm sure people will help you. Plan on the 63/64 area. But any space you can find between 61 and 65 (inclusive) is good.

Alright it is less than a week now. I propose those wanting to carpool meet at the Regent Pawn and Jewelry store at 3730 N Belt Line Rd, Irving. We can leave cars at Sarah's apartment complex right next door. Would really have like to have a head count for the campsites. I think I have Heather, Sarah and myself at C-82. Michelle and son, Dan and wife, Lea, Laurie + 2, Barbie, Issac, Wesley, and David in the B sites. Jeffery has a spot in the B sites I assume he would share. Chispin has T-4 and has it full already. Don't really have a commitment from Cathrine, Candy, Lori, Arie+1, or Claire....but I think we have room based on some not showing and space still.

I think the group plan is to go hunting diamonds at diamond crater Sat morning. Maybe hunt crystals/swim/dive off rocks/kayak Sat night. I have some survival training stuff - mostly Sun.
    My number is[masked]
So who is meeting at the carpool spot?

It's supposed to rain all day Saturday! I will wait and see how the weather forecast looks tomorrow before heading out instead of leaving this evening.

      August 29, 2014

  • Jeffrey L.

I rented a spot -Debbie at park told me B-65.
She called it a wooded area. Have a small tent.
Do not know the actual size of camp patch. If there's room for anyone wants to also pitch a tent, you are
welcome. bringing camp stoves and plan on cooking simple stuff. Will brew tea and have ice chests.
Hot tea in hot weather wha???

Glad to hear the fields plowed. Always unearths new stuff. I am bringing a pair of rubber boots in case there's a rain to be safe. Just picked up a bunch of camping stuff. I have a couple of air mattresses. Am bringing them with me. If anyone needs to use one, I have two. On their website they inform what tools are needed. I used to have a nice Army style folding shovel, this is good to use digging up dirt to sift plus at campground. A must! Need one. Lost it over the years. Better to be prepared.

Warning it will be a busy weekend and they may run out of stuff to rent. If we get there early, then no problem. The ground is really soft so a garden scoop is all you really need. A sifter screen is good too....oh and an electronic diamond tester/finder gizmo....JK.

$11 for a 3 day fishing license...I think they sell them at the marina. Pregnant women should not eat bass over 13 inches due to mercury.

    August 26, 2014

they rent all you need there but many things can be brought yourself. Basically we can surface search or dig up dirt and sift thru it. A diamond might be a just below surface. This will be a patient endeavor and some work. If you find a diamond-wow!

It's never too late - until it is over. You should read thru the comments on here and decide if you are carpooling with others. You can stay in area B with most of the group.

      August 25, 2014

Thanks Pat... we are going to do our best to get there Friday nigt. The diamond hunt is the only motivation for my son to go with me! Lea, we will be leaving around 5:00 Friday. I probably should not carpool this time as I am not sure how long my son will last rouging it. Lol this is his first trip with me...

I'd love to go, don't have my kids this weekend otherwise it would be a bit far with kids. I cannot leave Friday, would anyone line to carpool Saturday and come back Monday?

    August 16, 2014

    • Lea

Catherine, I am planning on leaving later on Friday. Could you leave late?

      August 24, 2014

  • Michelle

Pat, I never got confirmation from Crispin so I don't believe I have a secured site. You mentioned that I'm on B... who's site is that and is that confirmed it will be late Friday night or early Saturday before I could get there. Not knowing where I'm going, it might be safer for me to go Saturday morning and set up.

You can plan on Site B-62...you can find a map on here. But you can call when you arrive. The one problem with people arriving Saturday is the group was going diamond hunting Sat morn. You would likely miss that.

      August 24, 2014

    • Lea

Hi Michelle, would you like to carpool with my friend and me? We will be late Friday as well... We can find our way and stumble to set up together. Safety in numbers. :)

Joined the group only few days ago so any info appreciated. Reserved a camping spot in Area B. Wooded area B.
It is very reasonable! 13 bucks for a spot there!
I have two Coleman burners and plan to cook.
I figure a pot of corn on the cob? Camping food!
I have several nice coolers and plan on bringing
them full of ice. My last time searching for anything
in the field few days ago on a creek in Fort Worth.
Found a few sea fossils. Anyone out there know how to identify fossils?

I am bringing the kayak and my climbing shoes. I here that there are some deep water solo routes that need climbing.

I have yet to get a site so if anyone has room for a two man tent I'll be happy to share the site cost.

I just reserved a couple more spots but in the more primitive campsite area B. These do not have running water, so bring a container to get it. There are showers close by as C is one side of the marina and B is on the other side. Crispin has a site in the nearby T area.

The Labor Day trip by the Sierra Club is canceled! I followed your link and that is what I found. I might be up for a trip if we can come up with something. We have to be creative and not go where everyone goes (no tubing I guess!), and probably not too far because there will be Memorial Day traffic…..
