History: Caprock Canyons State Park, 100 miles southeast of Amarillo in Briscoe County, was opened in 1982. It consists of 15,313.6 acres (including the Trailway, a 64.25 mile Rail-to-Trail conversion, acquired by donation in 1992 from a Railroad entrepreneur). This acquisition added recreational adventure, stretching from the western terminus at South Plains up on top of the caprock escarpment to the eastern terminus of Estelline in the Red River Valley. This multi-use trail (hike, bike, and equestrian), opened in 1993, stretches the park through Floyd, Briscoe, and Hall counties crossing 46 bridges and running through Clarity tunnel, one of the last active railroad tunnels in Texas. The 64.25 miles of the Trailway are open to the public from Estelline to South Plains

My son Zach and I had a great weekend with all of you. It was our first time backpacking and camping and didn't really know what to expect. Thanks to Tom for being such a great planner/host.

As a beginner to backpacking, it was a good place to test myself and my gear. It was a hard hike that tested my endurance. Great learning experience. Enjoyed sharing the experience with other members. Thanks Tom for organizing this trip!

I thought this was a fun and interesting experience and with me being such an obvious novice at this appreciate all the help, guidance, and patience from all the members of the group. As I recover from my war wounds, I look forward to the next opportunity (hopefully better prepared) to get back to nature. I learned a lot of valuable lessons and made some new friends. I'd like to especially thank (this is a long list): Tom, Chris, Jeff, Adriana, Tanya, Kerry, etc. etc. etc.. All of you helped me get through some challenging moments on this trip and it's very much appreciated.

Tom, we are getting there probably late Friday night/early Sat morning. If you can, send me a contact number just in case. Also, make sure you guys save some "blessings" for Sat night.

I'm eating before the hike and just having a snack Friday night. If you want to cook in camp that's fine too!!

    April 19, 2012

  • Barry

Are the Friday night campers doing dinner at the campsite?

    April 19, 2012

  • Adriana

Hello, is a caravan forming already?

    April 18, 2012

  • Tom D.

I recommend 4 liters per day. I'll bring extra water if anyone forgets. Just grab me at the trailhead.

    April 18, 2012

  • Angela

Yes, Thanks John for the forecast!!
Anyone else planning a late Friday night arrival and packing in on Sat. morning?
Also assuming we need to pack in ALL water.

    April 18, 2012

  • Ben

I guess there will be no floatation devices needed for this trip. It should be a nice and "quiet" weekend.

Beautiful forecast for backpacking! Thanks John!

I hate to ride. So, will be driving and glad to share the gas cost if someone needs a ride. So, have room for 2 or 3 people. Plan on taking off Friday around 11-12. Please e-mail me if you're interested.

Anyone know the distance from the North Prong Primitive Campsite to the parking lot? Trying to get an idea what time we will be leaving on Sunday.

    March 27, 2012

  • Tom D.

All campsites booked. I've upped the number to 32. Hope everyone's ready for a fun backpacking wknd.

    March 16, 2012

  • Ben

Thanks for raising the number Tom. It will be a great weekend!!!

    March 9, 2012

  • Tom D.

Caprock Canyons has seasonal waterflow, and it is not reliable. I recommend each backpacker bring a mimimum of 4 litres for Friday night thru Sunday morning. If you use a lot of water for cooking meals, bring 5-6 litres. I have never filtered backcountry water from this park, and have found the park to be bone dry on a couple of visits.

    March 9, 2012

  • Ben B.

What is the water situation here? Does it all need to be brought in? Recommendations?

    March 9, 2012

  • Tom D.

After much persuading, I have raised the number of backpackers from 16 to 30. I hope everyone is ready!

    March 9, 2012

  • Tom D.

Ben, I generally try to limit backpacking groups to smaller numbers. On other events, I encourage larger attendance numbers. I'll try to post another trip to Caprocks in May or maybe earlier in April.

    1 · February 18, 2012

  • Ben

Tom, is there a way you can increase the numbers? Some of us have a Texas State Parks membership and we could join you there.
    Thanks.

This meetup filled up in one day. I may be able to schedule a second backpack to Caprocks in early May before it gets too hot! ;)
