Part 2 of Beginner Backpack. Open event!

This event has been changed to an open event. This event is a continuation of the Backpack training on 01-05-13. All Attendees of the[masked] event are encouraged to attend to complete the training. But you may attend even if you didn't go to the first class.

Here is the assignment. Show up with your backpack loaded for an overnight trip, we will be taking a very short hike and making a mock campsite. Campers will set-up their tents get out the sleeping gear and cook or prepare a lunch, campers will then teardown the tents and repack. The purpose of this event is for beginner backpackers to get a feel for carrying a pack, setting up camp along with making a lunch and making sure they have all the gear. Please carry at lest 2 liters of water. Total time is about 2 hours.

The following weekend we will be going to Lake Texoma for a real overnight trip.

Keep in mind I will not be going over the items discussed in the first training session this event is a continuation.

Scott...am at a major crossroads...which msr stove do you have and or recommend?

    • Scott

The best value and highest rated stove for years has been the MRS Pocket Rocket. Many many options out there......

Thanks Scott! Had a good time.

Btw, if y'all ever turn around and Cliff and I are missing it just means he has stopped to take pictures .... and more pictures.... and a few more pictures. We'll catch up -- don't wait.

Ok...I will be so new to this and I know it is possible but given thought to just the essentials, how do we carry every thing. Are pack mules allowed ...lol

Thanks for organizing. I have backpacked a little bit before but I learned some good stuff. I am looking forward to my first backpacking trip with you guys. It will be a challenge trying to go light... which has always been my problem but I got good pointers that will definitively come in handy on the upcoming trips. I had fun today!!!

Man, I wish I was there. I wanted to relax for a day. It was probably my last chance. After an extensive custody battle, I have won. I will have my boys from here on out. I'm not complaining.

We might have to have a "backpacking with kids" group.

Sonia, I have gone car camping in the past but want to begin going on overnight hiking trips. You can go to The Backwoods store or a similar place and the sales people are very knowledgeable and are happy to give you advice on what gear you will need. If you have limited expenses, you can go to Amazon & see a multitude of camping & hiking gear that's very reasonable.

There is also Mountain Sports here in Arlington. They have never steered me towards over priced equipment and often tell me ways to do without some piece that I thought I needed.

I usually pick up one piece of equipment after each camping trip to spread out the cost AND I always watch the REI stores in Dallas, Plano, & Austin for their garage sales.

Also worth it to pick up junk camping gear at garage sales and then replace it slowly as you camp more and know what you need.

I just joined the group and have no equipment at all, but I'd be very interested in another "part 1 " class to get some initial advice. Hope you guys have fun tomorrow!

    Scott,

I'm going to get a big FAIL for the homework assignment. I didn't finish my shopping. Any chance you're going to do this again? I don't want to take a spot from someone who is better prepared. Loved the first class though!!

I'm athletic and in shape and would love to begin hiking and have camped many times in my life. However I have done nothing like this and have no idea how to get started... how do I get help

Sonia, you have come to the right place. If you can make it to this trip, please sign up on the waiting list. Usually several people change their RSVP and you will get bumped to the YES RSVP. If you cannot make it, we usually have a monthly social to hang out and discuss trip possibilities. I am not sure everyone on the list has gear so some will come along to be spectators. Scott may know the answer to this though.

Thks Kevin. I can't make tomorrow after all but hopefully the next one. Have fun.

  • Cliff

Not sure if my RSVP msg went through. I removed myself from the list so someone else can take my place b/c there's no way I can honestly carry my normal pack and all my camera equipment. Is it okay if I tag along to take pics with just my camera equip & water? I can carry spare water (10 liter camelbak) as a safety measure.

Are we going to stick with the "every other weekend" for the Beginning Backpackers classes? January 5th, January 19th, February 2nd?

    January 17, 2013

  • Becky

My Sundays are already full but I would like to go on day hikes on Saturday's. Enjoyed the beginning "sticks" class :-)

Looking forward to redeeming myself with the Hennessy Hammock.

    January 11, 2013

    • Della M.

The hammock and I have a love/hate relationship. I love it in the summer and hate it in the winter. I'm determined to beat the Cold Butt Syndrome! Currently stitching an underquilt for it...You're strictly hammock camper or do you cheat on the hammock with a tent in winter?

      1 · January 11, 2013

    • Kevin

I have had my Hennessy for several years now and camp 95% in it. And I love it in the winter! I have a winter setup on it but not the down. If you have not sewn the down on yet, hold off. I will bring my Hennessy on this trip along with my tent. I'll show you the winter setup and you can crawl in and see just how quickly it heats up. You will be surprised. I have developed and read many useful tips I'll be glad to share with you. I'm so happy to see another Hennessy user. It's the only way to go.

I used the trekking poles on a hike yesterday. Once I figured out how to prevent Arya from tangling her leash in my pole, they worked really great. My shoulders ached a bit last night but I wasn't as tired on the hike as usual.

    Looking forward to next class.
