The North Texas Traditional Dance Society (NTTDS) was chartered in 1986 as a non-profit educational organization to promote a better understanding and appreciation of American folk dancing, its music, its history, and related folklore. It is an affiliate of the Country Dance and Song Society. We are an all-volunteer organization, based in Dallas.

The main style of dance we do is called Contra Dancing (also known as Barn Dancing). It is a form of American folk dance derived from English Country Dancing, Irish Set, Scottish, and other forms of dance. It has no fancy footwork, so is easy (and fun) enough for beginners to enjoy almost immediately, especially with occasional help from our friendly experienced dancers.

We hold several Community Dances each month, one each Saturday. These are open to the public, feature live music and all are in a smoke- and alcohol-free environment. No experience is needed, because all the dances are taught. You don't need to bring a partner. We encourage everyone to change partners for each dance.

Contra dancing is almost always danced to live music. The style of music can be a so-called New England sound, Irish or Celtic tunes, or Appalachian/Mountain fiddle tunes. Most evening dances cost about the same as a movie ticket.

Newcomers are always welcomed. All of the dance steps you need to know will be taught during a brief lesson a half hour or so before the dancing begins. If you can walk, enjoy meeting people, like live music, Contra dancing is for you!

You do not need a partner. Come alone or bring your family and friends. Contra dancing can be enjoyed by singles, couples, and families.

Every spring we hold a weekend dance festival, featuring a nationally-known band and caller. This draws over 100 people from Texas, Oklahoma, and a several other states.
