Kate Wolf Music Festival

4 stages of Americana music for 3 days! Mostly folkish, bluegrassy, as well as some soul, R and B, pop... it's varies a little every year. This year's lineup includes John Prine, Greg, Brown, Taj Mahal, Alice DiMicele, Irma Thomas, Poor Man's Whiskey, Brothers Comatose to name a few. With 4 stages it's often hard to choose who to listen to. Nights are fun with a campfire sing along by the river and jamming at many campsites. It takes place in Laytonville- Mendocino County on 150 acres. There is a good choice of prepared food at the food booths as well as beer and wine to buy. Some is organic. Mostly healthy. Or bring your own of course. There is a river on the property- not much of a swim river but deep enough to paddle around in. This is Wavy Gravy's property and his brief stage appearances are a joy throughout the festival.
This is such a relaxing, fun weekend. I've been to about 5 of them. Come have fun!

MORE LOGISTICS: Camping is first come first serve. There is a tent only area (must park your car outside that area) and there's the car/RV area where you can set up your tent next to your vehicle if you like. If you like a more quiet night your best bet is the parking area, farthest from the stage and tent area. If you want to be where people will be jamming at night you'll want the tent area and the parking area closest to the tents and stages. There are only porta potties but they are well maintained. There are free solar showers. Not much running water so best to bring your own drinking water. It's usually hot during the day and cold at night so prepare for both.
HOW TO MEET: I will set up a red sheet with a meetup sign toward the left side of the main stage daily. That can be a meeting place for people to set up their own chairs or sheets and wander to and from throughout the day and eve. (I won't be an early riser- some people line up at 0700 to get front row spots. As with most festivals- any empty seat is open to sit on until the owner comes back). The distance from the stage will probably vary but generally it will probably be a little farther back than the big oak tree in the middle of the grassy area. I plan to get there Friday about 1:00. I will park in the car/RV area as close to the main stage and tent area as I can get. I'll have an old blue-green Nissan Quest van with windsurf stickers on the back and will post a meetup sign on the front and back windshield as well as a red cloth flag on the antenna. There is some cell phone service at this location and I can try to post information on the meetup site from the festival but I can't promise it will work - I haven't tried it. It may not be necessary.
I will try to post this on several meetups. I think this type of event is best when there are enough people to mingle with that you can always find someone to wander to another stage with if you want or hang out with if you want. The more the merrier at this type of event. See you there!

Loved it! Great vibes, music, scenery, and jamming. It was worth dealing with the heat! Great little group of 4 of us camping together.

Okay- now I'm flexible as to what time we meet- whatever the majority wants goes... post whatever time is your preference. There are about 4 or 5 people meeting at the cafe. All have indicated that 12:00 is okay but they could meet earlier so now the time is open to majority vote.

hi all- I bought a 10x10 shade thing to put up next to our cars. A couple people have said that getting shade for car camping is nearly impossible. One person said that the shade gets taken by the workers and volunteers. I guess I just got lucky a couple times. We may get lucky but either way- it is worth the heat. I heard the ice at the store was only 5 dollars last year. I freeze water in some large water bottles and it holds up for a couple days. There is plenty of shade in other areas- on the edges of the large stage and other stage and 2 other small stages were full shade. And the river area has lots of shade. I suggest you bring sheets or something to shade your windows from the morning sun if you plan to sleep in your car. The tent area is in the shade if you really want to sleep in the shade. But remember it really gets cold at night too. I end up wearing a jacket for the campfire singing.

My shade thing is green with green and white striped "legs". I'll hang a red sheet with "meetup" sign on it from the side of the shade thing.

How about 12:00 to meet at the "Pour Girl's Cafe" parking lot? It is 4.7 mi. south of the festival site. Again the map link is below and my phone number is[masked]-5969. If there is a big calling for earlier-I can do it. let me know soon so I can post it asap. https://maps.google.com/maps?near=Camp+Winnarainbow,+50350+N+Highway+101+,+Laytonville,+CA+95454,+95454&geocode=CWvImRejtFVTFb1sXgIdIgij-Ck5ygjlqd6BgDF_Vuut_lxxeA&q=cafe&vps=3&f=li&gl=us&hl=en&dq=camp+winnarainbow+loc:+Laytonville,+CA&jsv=458c&sll=39.742653,-123.533278&sspn=0.006295,0.006295&num=10

Hi all-Vivian and I were discussing the benefits of a nearby offsite place to meet to make it easier to find each other. A google map search shows "the Poor's Cafe" in the tiny town of Laytonville 4.7 miles South of the event on Highway 101. How about making that a meetup spot? Looks like a big parking lot in the picture. Here is the link: https://maps.google.com/maps?near=Camp+Winnarainbow,+50350+N+Highway+101+,+Laytonville,+CA+95454,+95454&geocode=CWvImRejtFVTFb1sXgIdIgij-Ck5ygjlqd6BgDF_Vuut_lxxeA&q=cafe&vps=3&f=li&gl=us&hl=en&dq=camp+winnarainbow+loc:+Laytonville,+CA&jsv=458c&sll=39.742653,-123.533278&sspn=0.006295,0.006295&num=10. Meeting at the cafe sounds like a good idea. What time? My forest green Toyota truck has a matching colored camper shell on it. I have Grateful Dead, skiing, & climbing stickers on my truck.

I'm still undecided but will look for North Bay Hikers signs if I go up on Sat.

Hi, Eileen. Yet to buy my ticket, but I will be there! Early, in fact. Got your number, thanks. Mine is [masked]-2108. I will be driving/parking a green '97 Toyota Tacoma truck with camper shell, arriving as early as I can. Will have ice chests with ice and large blue ice packets. Sheets a good idea; will do. I don't have a shade structure but will try to improvise with tarps and rope. Please give me a description of your vehicle or a sign so I can find you in line of vehicles to get in or already there. Will have my I-Pad with 3G, but in the case of no service, please post a "North Bay Hiking" sign on your vehicle. If there is an information center I will also note myself there. This is going to be a blast! Thanks so much for organizing it! Feel free to call me beforehand; if not, I will be on the look-out for you. It would be ideal if we could caravan up. I am not working right now, so I can meet you Thursday night if that works for you.

This sounds so awesome, Eileen; thanks for organizing it. Getting a shady spot would be ideal and definitely the way to go. I can arrive earlier than 1:00 and would like to meet inside the property as you suggested. Please send me your cell phone number. Mine is [masked]-2108. I drive a two seater truck which will be packed and I need flexibility with driving days & times, so I won't be able to carpool, but I am willing to get there early to get a good camping spot, hopefully to share with others in our group.

great- I will PM you and all participants my cell number. I don't know if posting it publicly could possibly lead to lots of spam or something ? does anyone have input on that? So check your emails for a message with my number. If anyone else knows about posting it publicly let me know cause it would be alot easier to do that. I'll also take a photo of my van and me and see if I can post it so we can spot each other. Looking forward to it!

If there is interest we could meet between 1 and 1:15 Friday just inside the property but not in line to get your wrist band yet so we can enter together and thus camp next to each other. That would also depend on if we all want the same camping area. I like to try to get a spot with shade from the trees because it gets really hot during the day which melts your cooler ice and wakes you up in the morning. The shaded areas close up is very limited and may even be taken by 115. That would be my first choice spot to try to find-shade, up close. (cont. below due to word space limit)

    • Eileen M.

think we should agree to just go on in with whoever is there by 115 so the people running late don't feel pressured to hurry and so the people who are there aren't waiting around. It is nice to park together but I am at my car so rarely it doesn't matter that much. It's nice to plan your day together (which performers you want to see at the different stages) but we can also do that elsewhere. There is so much going on that I find I don't really want to be at my car much except to sleep, grab some food, change clothes. We could try to save a spot for others to squeeze into by parking strategically but you're not suppose to save spots.

Last year there was a small market inside the sold some items like ice and some food.

Suggestions, comments, discussions welcome. See you!

    Car pools?

    May 15, 2013

    • Eileen M.

Hi Marianne and all- Please feel free to use this conversation board to try to arrange carpools. I can't bring anyone in my van because I had to take all the seats out to fit my windsurfing gear (boards are long).
