Climb/Explore Red Rocks

Hey Gang,

I have been talking about doing this trip for a little while, so I figure I better get it scheduled before the weather heats up. It is so awesome that we are already talking about it getting too hot. This trip will be primarily, a climbing trip, but I know there are some pretty cool trails to explore out there as well as mountain bike (I just might bring my bike).

Richard is going to lead the climbs for us and I will do my best to assist, but if someone feels comfortable with lead climbing and would like to help out, I will hold a spot for that special someone.

The plan is to camp at the blm campground near the visitor center. This is first come first serve, so I hope I can get there on Thursday to grab a couple of spots. If for some reason, we get shut out and can't find an alternative, we can always camp at a resort on the strip. My fear is that if we get too comfortable in the city, we may not make it to the rocks. I will plan on getting two campsites, which allows a total of 18 campers. If it is just Richard leading, then I will need to keep the number of climbers at under ten, but that could grow too.

Here is a map to the campground.

Here is a trail map.

So, when you sign up, let me know in a comment if you plan on climbing and/or camp with us. This is important so I can track the number of climbers that are coming. If the event is full, sign up for the waiting list because plans will change and spots will open up. This event will be posted to the discussion board, so check it out and post any questions or concerns there. We can use it to coordinate carpools/caravans. Stay tuned, more info to come.

See you out there!

Jim

Thank you so much for the opportunity to experience such a beautiful location. Rock climbing was amazing - am buying gear right now to be better prepared for the next trip. I know some rock climbers don't advise sharing gear so I have to say a big, heartfelt thank you to everyone that shared their gear and time and training for this event, especially Lee/Richard, Taka, Chad and Brian. Lee - your lessons are invaluable and taken to heart. After observing rock climbing in its natural habitat, I'm hooked and ready to approach the sport more seriously and with greater enthusiasm. Kudos, organizers!!!!

You're very welcome :) I am working at the climbing shop the next 4 days if you'd like to come in and ask about gear, although 5 of our employees lead 5.10 trad so it isn't like I have to be there : ) hehe

After most of the group was done climbing Saturday, a few of us went to go do some crack climbing.
Here is video of me finishing up "Atman" 5.10a.

Guess we should post on here that we're going -- we're not camping though, just climbing/hiking/etc.

What kind of climbing are you planning? Top rope or multi-pitch. Will there be any bouldering?

    January 18, 2013

    • Jim H.

      Hey LeAnn,
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I believe we will be doing a lot of rope climbs, but I'm sure there will be some bouldering opportunities as well. I will be updating everyone shortly. See you soon!

Bobby and I can only make it for Saturday/Sunday (driving out Friday afternoon), if that helps free up space for anyone. I've never done outdoor climbing and don't have my own gear. LeAnn, can we borrow some? If not, I guess it's time to go shopping. We'd be happy to babysit when we're not climbing.

    January 30, 2013

    • LeAnn C.

I can bring two extra harnesses for you. The only thing I don't have extra is climbing shoes. Depending on the routes you may or may not need them. Thank you for offering to watch the little one. She loves the outdoors and watching climbers.

    January 23, 2013

  • Christine G.

I would like to do mostly climbing and a little hiking, but I will not be staying at the campsite.

    January 23, 2013

  • Taka S.

Is anyone planning on staying in Vegas?

    January 19, 2013

    • karen l.

Rent a house, its what we did last year, so much cheaper than a hotel

      January 21, 2013

  • Richard C.

Yes! I would be in for Hotel - especially since it is Vegas after all! I love camping but we can save that for when there is more daylight hours.

    January 19, 2013

  • Jim H.

Therry says the Red Rocks Hotel is close to the park.

    January 19, 2013

  • LeAnn C.

Also, I have a lot of climbing gear: extra harnesses, a rope, quickdraws, ascenders, trad gear, etc. I can lead easier climbs if someone below doesn't mind playing with a baby while I'm up. I can come up on Thursday night as well to hold another campsite if you want to include more people.
