Explore Anza Mud Caves II

Hey Everyone,

I am still working out the details of this excursion, but I wanted to get the date set on the calendar. While there are things I don't know yet, here are the things that I do know:

  • Since we will be going on a weekend day, we will need to get out there very early (like 7:00 am early), hence the 5:00 am meeting time.
  • There are lots of caves to explore, so we will hit the more popular ones first, then move on to the lesser known ones.
  • Although the temps should be pretty comfortable (cold in the morning though), bring lots of water and food for the whole day.

Since I am not familiar with the location (this is my first time going out there), we should all definitely carpool/caravan out there. My car can hold 5 comfortably.

I will be updating this post regularly and I am open to any suggestions anyone has.

See you out there!

Jim

Well that's annoying.... I rotated all my photos in Picasa, and it doesn't actually save the rotation.... so a lot of them aren't topside up....

What a unique experience... eager to explore the rest of the caves and "jump down the rabbit hole" at Hidden Cave with Team Hobbs. Thanks to all fellow attendees for creating a memorable experience.

If you didn't go, you missed out. A long waited and anticipated achievement in my life - to go into some serious caves. Great crew -- had a BLAST. Will get the photos up soon guys!!

This was such a fun trip. I had a great time. Jim and Chad did a great job organizing the outing and leading everyone through the caves.

Fantastico! Any meetup event that has two Chads has got to be great!

By far one of the best adventure days yet! Great company start to finish. And nothing beats the make do spirit of Chad 2 and his clothing. The many uses for a bandana - now there's a new one.

Anyone need a ride to target tomorrow? im leaving from carlsbad (carlsbad village/tamarack) at 430am. if you are along the 78 i can pick you up but I am NOT driving to the caves, I am carpooling so the ride is only to target. Can't wait!

So we are meeting in the Target Parking lot in Escondido and not Nessies in Fallbrook, correct?

@Dan ... The road last Sunday was fine for cars as well, but after this last rain, no telling if its dried up yet or not. Are you going to the meetup point first? Maybe you can carpool with someone else.

How is the road conditions/carpool situation this weekend? I'm willing to drive but sorta doubt my Prius can make it all the way out there.

It can get dirty and you will want a headlamp (preferred) of a flash light and maybe a backup.

Hidden cave has a rope near the end but the rope can be climbed in tennis shoes. There are some caves that have some slight climbing to get to the entrance but I do not know if those are going to be visited. It takes at least 2 days to explore all the caves.

I've heard you'll get quite dirty. Wear junk clothes and maybe pants since you might be crawling.

Hey Nicol... so, you will not need your shoes and chalk. It is all climbing with only or or two caves having any type of climbing but since its limestone, its not sable at all, so regular comfy shoes are perfect. As far as food, we have ice chests that you can put sandwiches and snacks in but there is no place to buy it there. Bring WATER WATER WATER. as far as money, you wont need any unless you would like to donate to whomever you carpool with.

Since this is my first time doing this (Meetups or Mud Caves), will I need to bring anything aside from the obvious water and sunscreen and comfy shoes? Is there climbing? Will I need gear and chalk? How much money should I bring? Should I bring lunch for myself? I appreciate your input! Thanks!

Holidays are hectic! Hopefully someone will do this again in the new year! The pics look like fun :).

One morerecommendation: Do not try all 15 in Hidden or any other narrow cave at the same time. Five people at a time is probably good for Hidden (narrow but standing, hard to pass). Plunge, Chasm, Big Carey can all handle the 15 at a time. Some others like E ticket (belly crawl) should be only 2-3 at a time.

I have been out there many times and have explored virtually all of the mud caves (and there are many). If you desire some info I may be able to provide it.

The road is usually passable to the main parking location immediately across from Chasm cave with any moderate clearance vehicle such as a mini van.

I recoomend Chasm and Hidden (hidden has a rope climb - I recommend going no further than top of the rope) as top two choices. Carey's Big Mud is similar to Chasm. Plunge also is neat.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
