Night Snorkeling/Caving at The Cove

Hey Everyone,

The Cove is a great place to snorkel, cave, and other shenanigans. It's even better at night! All you need is an inexpensive mask and snorkel, fins are nice to have, but you really don't have to swim very far to see all that there is to see. Also, it's easier to get into the caves without fins. A wetsuit would probably be appropriate since it can get a little cold at night. And I have two scuba lights for night diving, so we might actually be able to see something pretty cool.

We can cruise around the main area as well as head over into the caves if you are feeling adventurous. Maybe jump off a few rocks (the legal ones, Mr. Lifeguard). I would advise that we carpool since parking can be difficult, but if you want to meet us down there, we can meet at Scripps Park (Map). To carpool, meet me at Hensley's parking lot on Tamarack and I5 at 4:30 pm. Let me know in your rsvp if you are carpooling and call me if you are running late or if I am.

Check out the video from last year.

See you out there!

Thanks for organising this, it was fun. Good to see Kendall at the hot tub afterwards. My cellphone is[masked] if anyone's in La Jolla again :-)

This was a fun event. The cove was beautiful and the water was flat and warm enough. Sea lions swam around us and there was plenty of other life to see amid the surge in the caves, under the arches and tunnels, and in the open water: lobster, garibaldi, sea bass, damsels, and more.

I think the water is 65-70 at the moment. I've been swimming with no wetsuit a lot with no issues.

@Corry - Garibaldi, lobster (it wasn't a Rock Lobster), and other basic creatures.

@Michelle - Lights are nice, but you should be ok without one. Just stay close to someone with a light. Also, I have an extra one or two.

If you can swim, you're in! If the surge is rough, you will probably want to skip going into the caves.
