Work Hike - Camp Blanding

We will meet at the front Gate area of Gold Head and leave most of our vehicles there and shuttle to the starting point on SR 21. This is a beautiful section of trail which traverses through sandhills and passes by two pristine lakes. Bring plenty of water, lunch, snacks, loppers or clippers and wear appropriate hiking shoes. The hike is approximately 4 miles but could take up to 6 hours to complete. This is an opportunity to see what it takes to maintain our Florida Trail system. Work hikes give you a chance to get to know people that share a common interest in hiking.

Thank you for making this such a huge and productive hike. It was awesome to have some new folks with us. The trail would be in shambles if not for the hard work of dedicated volunteers such as yourself. On behalf of myself and the chapter I can't thank you enough.

Stay tuned for more info about the Blanding scouting we did. I think you'll like what you'll see. ;-)

Janie, I am pleased to report that the trail does not need blazing. There were a couple of weathered blazes but others in the immediate area cured the defect.

    Several firsts today:
1st time we had this many helpers on a work hike - it was great to have new faces!
1st time Janie wasn't out leading the way, but we managed ok.
1st time it was that cold at the end of the hike, not the beginning!
Thanks everyone for a great day!

Don't think we don't have enough people. Janie has other work at Goldhead if we have enough to split up the group. Camp Blanding come first though. We don't get out here very often, so we want to get it looking sharp!

    February 14, 2013

  • Leslie

Janie - I'm whining! Do we have to start at 8am? It's going to be cold!

teehee. I am voting for lunch! Also, Mike Hankey, remind me to return your water bottle from our last work hike.

    February 12, 2013

    • Mike H.

Thanks Mary Alice I had forgot all about it.

      February 12, 2013

With this team, we could be done in about 2 hours, then we could go for somewhere for lunch!

    February 11, 2013

    • Janie

With this team we should get the trail in great shape and maybe have time to cut a new trail!

Not scared of the word "work", though I did have to look it up in the dictionary! I'd love to help out, but I have no tools to bring because we live in an RV and haven't needed them. Hoping there will be extras?

    February 10, 2013

    • Janie

I will have a few extras don't worry!

      February 10, 2013

    • Cary B

I'll have extra gloves too. ;)

I really enjoyed the walk today. It was great:-)

    1 · February 9, 2013

Don't let the word "work"scare you off. Even if you just come and walk the trail, you will be helping! This is a section not many get to see. We may even spot the endangered scrub jay out there.

Hypothetically, this would be a dream hike for me. I'm not sure I can make due to variables. I really want to do this, but it may not be possible.
