Structure Maintenance: Osceola

Difficulty Rating: Moderate to Hard

Some of you may be aware that we have a number of boardwalk issues within the Osceola Natl Forest Section. Several of these in the vicinity of Turkey Run have been deemed impassable and were recently removed by the USFS. We have an excellent opportunity to work with the USFS crew leaders to address some of the outstanding issues.

It’ll be a fun project, removing one boardwalk and using motorized wheelbarrows to haul out the lumber. We will also be bolstering another one by using webbing and rock fill to anchor it.

Boardwalk

This is a technical maintenance event. If you are ready to do some hard (and potentially wet) labor while learning new trail maintenance skills and equipment we'd love to have you join us. We are working on making camping arrangements if you want to stay in the area overnight.

I'll update this announcement with specific requirements as we formalize our plans. Times are subject to change.

Due to the nature of the event we are limiting it to 10 volunteers. If you RSVP and your plans change please update your status.

Sounds like FS should have called this one friday. 22.51c – Procedures. Work hazards, as identified in the JHA, may require extra precautions. Base work hazards on factors such as water depth, flow velocity (ft/sec), and turbidity. Employees shall:
Obtain reliable weather reports and suspend measurements during lightning storms or when a storm is approaching.
Remember SAFETY FIRST!!   With the new technology they can predict lighting strike probability days in advance allowing  for decisions  to be made to cancel or reschedule.

that the crew took all the best precautions, as they always do

This was a FS activity and there were warnings all up and down the east coast. Did you see the house in lake city that was peppered by hail. The reason for there rule that suspends measures when when a storm is approaching is there are no precautions for lightning or hail.

The pictures are great. Looks like a beginning of a new error for the Florida Trail. Sorry I wasn't there to help. You guys are the best!

Cary says: The new equipment purchased by the FTA was tremendous. The excavator made very easy work of pulling the pilings from the ground as well as dismantling and moving entire sections of the boardwalk. The CanyComs also made easy work of hauling the debris out to the road. They're slow especially when you have to maneuver through the trees with a load but can carry a significant amount of wood, tools, etc.

Many thanks to the gang for braving the wet trail conditions and the pouring rain to at least get started on this demolition project. We'd hoped to accomplish a lot more but as Allison said, at least the work has started. Ian and Chris will also be staying a bit longer so I'm going to work with the USFS to get another weekend scheduled soon.

Thanks to Allison for a super meal Sat night! It was food that warmed the soul...which really helped since we were all soaked to the bone. :-)

Too bad about the weather, Cary. How much did yáll get done yesterday and how were those motorized wheelbarrows?

    March 24, 2013

    • Cary B

We pulled out maybe 30' of boardwalk. Not much but better than nothing. The CanyComs are awesome and save a lot of backbreaking work.

CanyComs are awesome and so much fun!!! They were a great investment on FTA's part... So is the baby bobcat! Wish the rain didn't come but at least work started

Today is a wash (literally). I'm pulling the plug and we're packing up. The storm heading our way and wind advisory till 8pm makes me think it's best to try again. Thanks for everyone's help yesterday.

Are we on for 8:30 this morning?

It's just starting to rain again. It looks like another big mass is over Tallahassee heading east. Let me confer with the crew. Sit tight for now.

  • Rick W.

Ironically, this kind of rain really does not bother me. Now i'm stuck at home. I doubt anyone brought a camera due to the weather.
(I don't want to sound like I'm in charge or anything, this is just a suggestion.) If the hike were rescheduled, I'd do my best to make it. It looks like there is a lot of work to do and I'm very sorry to have missed. it.

    March 23, 2013

    • Cary B

Unfortunately we have to take advantage of the FS crew that's here before they leave so rescheduling isn't an option really.

      March 23, 2013

We built that one with the FS help about 20 years ago, we provided the labor they provided the material.

Hey, you'll are missing the hail!

    • Cary B

Yeah, looking like we're forecast for thunderstorms. I'll try to get in touch with the crew tomorrow to get their feeling. Stay tuned.

      March 20, 2013

    • Allison

I talked to Peter yesterday and was talking about the rain but he didn't say anything about canceling. They aren't here for long so rain or shine unless Cary or I say anything different.

      March 20, 2013

  • Leslie

not sure how I can help but I can carry food

    March 20, 2013

I spoke with our USFS crew leaders today. We will meet at the Olustee trailhead. Don't go directly to Ocean Pond.

    March 12, 2013

I'm scheduled to be "on call" that weekend but I'll try to get someone to cover for me. There was lots of water in the area when we installed those walkways. We need rain!

Different techniques will be used to makes sure these bridges aren't washed out again &&&&& we will be able to use the new FTA trail equipment... A motorized trail wheelbarrel

    March 11, 2013

    • Cary B

I still think this needs the new Bobcat too. ;-)

      March 11, 2013

  • Eugene D.

I want to remind you that I miss these opportunities because I'm currently working out of Kansas City. I hope to be recalled to Jax soon so I can help. This section of the trail is beautiful but there are boardwalk issues.

    March 11, 2013

    • Cary B

Unfortunately you're right, Eugene. Water and fire (not to mention heavy equipment) have taken their toll on some of them. Hopefully you'll be back soon to help with other events.
