When Lightening Strikes and Chapter Meeting

We have meterologist, Andrew Shashy, from NOAA coming to talk about some weather safety tips we need to know when we are out in the woods.  I'm looking forward to finding out if you really do count "1-MISSISSIPPI, 2-MISSISSIPPI...".  Hope to see you there!

We have Room A reserved.

Another helpful tip: if you are outdoors and the hair on the back of your neck starts tingling, lightening maybe very close. Quickly squat just on the balls of your feet and cover your head with your hands. The idea is to limit your contact with the ground and to keep yourself low at the same time. Don't be the highest thing in the immediate area.

It was a smaller group, but the speaker was really interesting! Did you know that lightening can arc up to 20 miles from the originating thundercloud? Hence the phrase "out of the blue". He encouraged us to use their website www.noaa.gov for good forecasts. I think Cary is going to buy the chapter a portable weather station now!
