Hike Seaton Creek Historic Preserve

This hike could be  4-6 miles, depending on how we wander around this beautiful new City of Jax park.
The terrain is flat, the pace will be easy.  We will be out there several hours, but not all day.  Bring water, snacks, wear closed-toe shoes (some parts of trail may be wet), use bug spray before we head out.

Can you estimate how long the hike will last? I have another engagement at 3:00 and am wondering if I can do both.

    April 10, 2014

    • Patricia

Is it easy to find? Is there a specific place to meet? Is it ok to bring a friend?

    April 9, 2014

    • Leslie

Walter - was the parking lot wet?

      April 10, 2014

    • Walter B.

The parking lot was moist & soggy but not any deep standing water. A portion that is really wet is blocked off. It will be necessary to step over a water filled ditch to get to the road.

      April 10, 2014

  • Leslie

If anyone wants to carpool from the Westside, let me know. I could meet you at Lowes at Cassatt at 7:30am. Parking could be a problem depending on how large our group turns out to be...plus the other group that is starting after us.

roger that thanks! don't wait for me as I may be running a little late and going straight to the park!

      April 9, 2014

    • Leslie

So as of today, Patricia and Steven will meet me at Lowes. I have room for 1 more. I do need to leave right after the hike, though.

I checked out the trail conditions this morning. The designated trails are too wet for us to use so we will be traveling the blue blazed service road from the Arnold Rd trailhead to the kayak landing where we will take our break. The return trip may include a short portion of the Houston Creek Trail, which will be muddy but navigable, back to the service road. The service road is generally dry with pockets of standing water, one of which we may have to wade through unless it receeds by Saturday morning (only a couple of inches of water). If you arrive late, follow the service road to the kayak landing to catch up with us. I have saved a trail map in the Files section (menu at top of page, click More, then Files). FYI, I saw a gray fox and lots of butterflies & birds. Someone bring a butterfly ID book. Also, someone bring a camara with a telephoto lens because I saw something that looks like orchids on the other side of a pond & I want to get a photo to try & identify.

The park is in a naturally low & wet area with several creeks that run through the property. I heard that the city has plans to put in some boardwalks.

Seems to be following suit with our section of the FT. It's only water. ;-)

What time should we meet at the Preserve location?

    April 10, 2014

    • Walter B.

We need to be on the trail close to 8:30 as another group will be coming in behind us so please get there in the 8:15-8:29 range to sign in.

anyone want to car pool from the beach?

    April 9, 2014

    • Cindy

I have somewhere to go right after the hike, but I live at the beach so maybe we can carpool on a future hike.

      April 9, 2014

  • Leslie

Where shoes that you don't mind getting muddy.

    April 8, 2014

    • Caitlin

Yes!! I went a few weeks ago and nearly all the trails were completely flooded over.

      April 8, 2014

  • Tracey T.

FYI..there is another Meetup doing hike same day with 30 people going.

    April 5, 2014

    • Walter B.

The other group is the Sidetrackers singles group. The MeetUp says they are to meet at McDonalds at 9 am so we can probably get on the trail before they get to trailhead.

      2 · April 5, 2014

    • Leslie

Yes, I emailed them and let them know we would be out there, too.

      April 8, 2014

If anyone is thirsty after the hike we will be right down the road from the Gator Pond which is located at the front of the Pecan Park Flea Market. Cold $2 draft beer and you can check out the gators and feed the fish. Of course, the Flea Market will be open as well.

Alas, we are not going to be able to participate in this hike. Sometimes life gets in the way. This is one of those times. See you next time!! Have fun!!!

  • Patricia

Hi Leslie. Are dogs allowed to go on this hike? Just wondering...

    March 26, 2014

    • Leslie

Patricia, with this large of a group, dogs would not be a good idea. No dogs this hike. Thanks for asking ahead of time.

      March 27, 2014

  • Leslie

This is going to be a large group, so we may split it up.

    March 19, 2014

  • Jeff T.

I tried biking this one the day it was officially opened. Still needs some work, but hiking it would be better until the trails improve.

    March 9, 2014

  • Ki

Leslie, how long is this hike?

    March 3, 2014

    • Leslie

Hi Ki - I know you like the 10 milers, but you could go around twice if you want! Çan't say for sure, but not more than 6 miles.

I very much enjoyed Saturday's hike at Goldhead/Camp Blanding. I have no idea what I'll be doing in 6 weeks, so this is a tentative yes. It looks like a great place for a hike.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
