Bayard Conservation Area

Let's hike the Bayard Conservation Area on May 17. Last May, the very rare Bartram's Ixia wildflower was abundant here so let's go see if will make an encore appearance. We will follow a trail of approximately 7 miles through an area noted for it's hoofed and winged wildlife. Our hiking season will be at or near the end so this may be one of your last opportunities to walk in the woods before the summer heat arrives. I will post more details about directions & meeting location later.

Too bad you didn't get to see a Bartram's Ixia. The one I have in a pot at home bloomed this week & I uploaded a pic I took just as it was having it's coming out that morning. Photos make it look blue but it was as purple as a royal robe. It has something to do with the pigment & how it's read by cameras. I will check for it next year and send out an alert if I see any.

So fun! Only one tick. And thank you to those who took pity on the unprepared, dehydrated hiker. ;) Great fun, great group of people.

I counted 12 ticks and yes, the lead had yellow flies but we trekked through. I would do it again. Thanks again Janie and Walter.

Truly enjoyed the hike and meeting so many fellow hikers. And yes, it was a bit of a mud slog i heard laughter as we took turns getting our feet wet. :-) i shall add 2 to the tick count.

Great hike. Lots of new and very nice hikers. Not too hot, kinda wet tho. But, no flies, hallelujah. My feet are UP and I am really pooped! Slogging through the wetlands is work......

Excellent hike, though a bit soggy. No Ixia, Boooo! Pitcher plants, Sundews and no yellow flies, Yaaay!

It was pretty wet but we had a great group who endured it. Not as many bugs as I had expected and the cool breeze was great. Picking some blueberries near the end was a treat. Enjoyed meeting some of our new members and seeing some out again. Hope you will come back and join us again.

Am I allowed to bring my dog?

    May 16, 2014

    • Janie

It is up to you if you want to bring your dog. The only warning I have is that you will need to keep a close eye out for snakes.

Here are some general directions from the Jax area. Take I95 South to County Road 210 which I believe is exit 329 & go west on 210. After 5 miles 210 makes a sharp left turn. Another 3 miles & it merges with 16A & continues straight ahead. About 1/2 mile & it dead ends into SR13. Turn left on SR13, go about a mile & turn right onto SR16 (look for sign to Green Cove Springs), cross the Shands Bridge and the east trail head is about 1/2 mile on left (just past the road to Shands Pier). If you live in Mandarin, probably just follow SR13 all the way to SR16. From the west side of Jax or north Clay County, probably follow SR17 to SR16, head east & look for the entrance on the right.

Bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch. Also bug repellent. Might want to wear or bring a long sleeve shirt in case the yellow flies are out.

Walking Dead Experience cancelled, so I will join you all.
    Thanks

I uploaded a trail map. To download or print a copy go to More at the top of the page and click on Files. Most likely the hike will follow the White trail marked with a W on the map.

I checked out Bayard on Sunday & it looks doubtful that the Bartram's Ixia will be back this year. It is most responsive after a burn, so when you pass the recent burn areas, look for a blue wing-like wildflower just in case some decide to come up this year. I did not see any on Sunday. The area where it was plentiful last year is now grown over.

Sorry , working this w/e . Any chance of some mid week hikes ?

    May 13, 2014

    • Walter B.

Not much chance of mid week hikes at this time. Our Activity Leaders all work full time jobs so no one is presently available for mid week hikes. But I hope to retire some day so then I have all the time in the world to do things like hike on a Tuesday. If anyone is interested in becoming an Activity Leader, especially if you can do mid week hikes, get in touch with me.

Janie, 7 miles as long as we keep moving, we should be done by noon?

    May 14, 2014

    • Janie

Don't plan on being done by noon as some will not hike that fast. The yellow flies aren't my favorite though. We will see when we get there.

I hope to hike Bayard in cooler weather. I need to skip Saturday; it's gotten too hot, especially with the humidity. See you all in the fall!

Is it OK to bring my 14 year old daughter? This is our "home" trail and we are very familiar with Bayard. Thanks.

    May 12, 2014

    • Janie

That would be fine as long as she is able to hike 7 miles

I ended up double-scheduled this weekend. If possible I'll be attending the Chapter Council meeting in Gainesville.
