Moonlight Hike

http://www.floridastateparks.org/mikeroess/events.cfm

We will hike approx. 2 miles along the Ravine Ridge Trail and a portion of the Florida Trail in Gold Head Branch SP. Bring water, bug repellent and wear appropriate hiking shoes. This hike is by moonlight so no flashlights needed. The hike is sponsored by the Gold Head Associates and is open to the public so there may be a large group. No pets allowed. Go to the link above to download the flyer or check out the details. There is a $5 per vehicle entrance fee into the Park. Gate closes at dark so don't be late.

Thanks for organizing a great outing, Janie. Glad this was at night since it would have been way too hot to hike during the day when the temp was about 90 degrees and humid but by eight it had fallen to a more manageable 80 degrees. Enjoyed the firefly display and the challenge of the trail. Only nature cooperating with moonlight would have made it better.

We had a wonderful time and made some new friends! I've never seen that many lightning bugs before. It was magical and fun hike. Thank you, Janie!

I think the clouds kept a lot of people away but we were still able to see quite well on the trail and still had a total of 30 hikers. The lightning bugs were everywhere. It looked like the trees were decorated for Christmas with flashing white lights all over them. It was great to meet some of our new members. Thanks to all who came out.

Moonlight? Well, the moon tried to peek through the clouds, but we hiked mostly in the dark with not one person tripping on the many roots! It was a great group, and the hike was enhanced with lovely fireflies. Very enjoyable. I look forward to the club's Haunted Hike. Thanks Janie for organizing the hike.

I started out from my daughter's home, In Winter Park, with tent, sleeping bag, etc., but I had no idea how long the trip would take. I eventually had to give up.

      Sorry you missed it Ken!

Even if it is raining in Jacksonville that does not mean it will be raining in Keystone Heights. Looks like only a slight chance. May be a little cloudy but we will have fun.

We were really looking forward to this, but I guess it's not to be. Have a great hike.

      Sorry you can't make it.

We usually hike this without flashlights so be sure to wear appropriate shoes as the hike has roots along the trail as well as hills. The lightning bugs should be out in full force. This hike is not along a paved road - it is in the woods. No baby strollers or pets allowed. Plan on approximately 2 hrs depending on the crowd. Look forward to seeing everyone there.

Please be on time as the gate closes at dark. It may take a little while to get everyone on the trail but it will be worth it. We may try to have a separate sign in for our meetup group so we can see how many are there and maybe we can all hike together. The tram only hauls 25 at a time but if there is a large crowd we can opt to hike an extra mile along the road to get to the starting point. Look forward to seeing you all there.

Janie, I know the gate closes at some time but will I still be able to leave after the hike? I am staying at Kingsley Lake with my family for Mother's Day weekend and need to return sometime that evening. (I was so disappointed thinking I would be out of town during this hike and then the light bulb came on when I realized I will be just around the corner!)

Yes, you will be able to get out. The gate automatically opens when you hit the speed bump just before it. You only have to have the code to get in.

I rsvp'd on another meetup and didn't know this hike was limited so I cancelled my rsvp. I will still be going, just won't get credit here.

Janie, I'm going to reserve a campsite for just Sat. nite, only costs me $11.00 and I'd already have to pay $5.00 just to get in. I'm bringing a tent and the bare necessities so if I decide I want to stay I can, and if I don't I haven't really lost anything.

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe someone will share the site and cost with you

Alberto and I will probably reserve a tent spot. :)

We made our reservation in the tent area of the full facility campground. See you there!

    Is anyone camping?

Wish I could make it but other commitments have already been made. Janie is an excellent hike leader
