FTA Annual Conference

Did you know that the first FTA Annual Conference took place in 1969?

For over 40 years we have gathered to celebrate the hard work of those who helped build the Florida Trail system! This year we are excited to invite every member and non-member to our 44th Annual Conference at the YMCA Camp McConnell.

With over 30 activities to chose from, you will be able to customize your 2013
Conference Experience. So save the date and visit our website to register
online. Also, check out our video where we give you a two minute tour of Camp
McConnell!  http://youtu.be/W_xLbKYVcnA

In conjunction with the annual conference, join us for the Florida Trail Association's Annual Meeting taking place Sunday, March 17, 2013, 8:30 a.m. at Camp McConnell.

The Trailblazers had great presence at the Conference. Cary and Sue were speakers. Janie won the John Weary Trail Award. Fred and Leslie were elected to the Board. Linda Benton ran the FTA Store, and made the beautiful quilt for the auction. I'm so proud to be a part of such a great chapter!

The problem with being a speaker is you miss stuff. :) I wanted to hear Sue's Camino experience as well as some others. Kudos to Linda for working the store all day. Next year we need to get her a fan! I didn't realize she made the quilt! Very nice work!

Linda has made a quilt for the auction for the past 13 years!!

Got there a little late and missed part of Cary's presentation. Guess I will have to try again. The part I saw was well done and it made me want to get a hammock. Wish I could have camped and stayed all weekend. It is always fun to hang out with fellow hikers. I think we have the best chapter and like Leslie said I am proud to be a part of it.

I may see about doing it again at Wakulla Walkabout in Nov. I'm also hoping to break it up into a multi-day series to be hosted at REI. So stay tuned! That's why I'm the Hammock Evangelist! ;-)

Sue, I'm keeping the article to show at the next chapter meeting. You look great, and I was so surprised to see the story today. Great job!!!

Had a great weekend, even if I went to bed too early and lost out on the $250. REI Gift Certificate. Guess the old saying, "snooze ya lose" is true!!!! CONGRATS to Janie, on her well deserved award. Also congrats to Leslie our Secretary and Alton our returning board member.

Cary, my son is bringing his hammock, I saw in the video there was a big field for tents. Will he have a place to hang it for Saturday night? Also there's a lake I saw can we brings some kayaks?

    March 10, 2013

    • Cary B

Fred, I wish I could answer your questions. I've never camped there and didn't pay attention when I've had meetings there. Let me check with the person that's setting it up on both points.

      March 10, 2013

    • Cary B

Ok, Fred, I've been told there are suitable places to hang in the trees at the edge of the field. I've also been told that it's not worth it to bring the yaks for use at the camp. There isn't much water in the lake and weeds along the edge.

Sorry will not be able to go.

I'll also be speaking at the conference. In fact, I'm scheduled right after Sue so you can learn about the Camino and then head over to mine. I'll be discussing hammock backpacking and will cover gear selection, techniques, tips, and tricks. If you've ever considered leaving your tent behind and getting off the ground this session is for you. You'll walk away better equipped for making those first purchases and will be prepared for a great experience when you hit the trail.

I'll be there Friday and Saturday nights. Staying in the bunkhouse.

I'll be doing a Camino de Santiago presentation Sat morning. Later doing a lighten your load talk. Trying to do more discussion on ways to think when packing to lighten the load. Trying not to do the "What's in HHs pack."
