Work Hike: Suwannee River @ Bell Springs!

Join us on one of the most scenic sections of the FNST. We'll be meeting at the Bell Springs Trailhead and taking the trail west towards Little Shoals. Depending on how well things are going we hope to push on to US41 for a total distance of about 5 miles (per the data book). Exact route subject to change.

Bring your cameras and snacks! There are a couple of picnic tables along the way if you need to take a break. Please try to be at the trailhead as close to the posted time as possible.

What is a work hike?
This is a hike where we trim and mow the trail, clear downed trees, and perform any cleanup duties to make sure the trail is in good hiking shape. The goal is to clear any obstructions that might impede a hiker's progress and to ensure a pleasant outdoor experience. Please read What Is a Work Hike? and the Basic Trail Maintenance Guide.

Running late? Lost? Call[masked]-8049.

You can reach the trailhead from either US441 or US41. Take either to NW Lassie Black St. and turn north onto NW Morrell Dr. Follow Morrell until it dead-ends in a parking area at the trailhead.

Which one? The summer tanager or the Baltimore Oriole. Both pretty awesome, right?

      Sorry, the tanager. Indeed.

Thanks to everyone that made it out for the work hike. It's always great to have new people. We got a good bit done and got to enjoy a great section of trail. Apologies to those I didn't say goodbye to before you left.

Perfect day for hiking on one of the most scenic sections of the Florida Trail! Mark, Cindy and Laurie, glad you joined us. Hope you will come back. We will have plenty of opportunities for recreational hikes once we get the maintenance out of the way.

Be sure to layer! It'll be chilly in the morning but should warm up nicely as the day goes on. Also please record your mileage so I can report on it.

Does anyone know if the FT hike from SR 100 west to Hamton is a road walk? I'm not sure if part of it is now on the future rails to trails. Thanks, Paul

    • Janie

Paul, it is on the rail trail and has been for about 4 years now. I have not been out there lately to see what condition it is in but DEP keeps it mowed so it should be okay.

No worries. At least you're back on your feet!

Where can we camp and will anyone else be camping Sat. night?

    October 24, 2012

    • Cary B

I'm thinking of camping at Big Shoals. On the trail, not the campground. If my GPS is right it's about 1.25 mi from the Bell Springs trailhead. The site is right be the water with a fire ring and a couple of benches.

That sounds like a winner let me know if you intend on doing it, if not give me the info so I can stay.
