Work Hike: Suwannee River @ Bell Springs Pt 2!

Join us on one of the most scenic sections of the FNST. We'll be meeting at the Bell Springs Trailhead and taking the trail east towards Big Shoals. Big Shoals is the only Class III rapids in Florida. Depending on how well things are going we hope to relocate to maintain the section between US41 and Suwannee River Campground for a total distance of about 5 miles (per the data book). Exact route subject to change.

Bring your cameras and snacks! There are several benches available at the Big Shoals campsite if you need to take a break. Please try to be at the trailhead as close to the posted time as possible.

What is a work hike?
This is a hike where we trim and mow the trail, clear downed trees, and perform any cleanup duties to make sure the trail is in good hiking shape. The goal is to clear any obstructions that might impede a hiker's progress and to ensure a pleasant outdoor experience. Please read What Is a Work Hike? and the Basic Trail Maintenance Guide.

Running late? Lost? Call[masked]-8049.

You can reach the trailhead from either US441 or US41. Take either to NW Lassie Black St. and turn north onto NW Morrell Dr. Follow Morrell until it dead-ends in a parking area at the trailhead.

I liked this area better than the previous day and intend on going back to hike, Kayak and camp. Want to introduce this area to my children.

Forgot to mention that the Boy Scouts are very interested in helping us put a bridge on the way to Big Shoals. They were eager to do a service project for us!

Thanks to the Sunday crew for helping clear one of the prettiest sections of trail. Annie, glad to have you join us today even for a short while. Hope to see you on future hikes. Thanks to Fred for relieving me on mower duty and to Kevin and Walter for taking the saw from me. Hope everyone got home in time to still enjoy a little bit of their weekend.

If I don't have shears or anything to clear with is it possible to borrow some or would I need to buy them? Checking my Schedule and hoping to attend tomorrow.

Allison, there's no cost. The campsite is right on the trail. There aren't any signs that I recall to the trailhead but as Walter said it's basically on NW Morrell. Coming from Jax take 441N and then turn left on Lassie Black. Right on NW Morrell and it dead-ends at the trailhead in a small field.

Allison, when I entered the GPS coordinates that Cary provided into Yahoo Maps, it returned an address of 1245 NW Morrel Drive, White Spring, FL 32096. Try using that address in Google and see what you get.

Be sure to layer! It'll be chilly in the morning but should warm up nicely as the day goes on. Also please record your mileage so I can report on it.

time wise: how long is the walk? thanks!

That's hard to say, Maria. The roundtrip is about 2.5 miles so it's a relatively short distance. However, the time it takes really depends on the condition of the trail and how much work is required to clean it up. I wouldn't expect it to take more than 3-4 hours but I haven't been on this section since March.

This is an outstanding trail along the river. Terrain is unusual for Florida but it is an easy hike. A camera is a must!
