The Turkey Burn, Post Thanksgiving Hike!

Willie Browne Trail in the Theodore Roosevelt Area of the Timucuan Preserve

Hike starts at 9:00 am, Saturday 24th

This hike will start at the trail head for the Willie Brown Trail. Trail head parking is .8 miles north of McCormick Rd. (Wonderwood Dr) on Mt. Pleasant Rd. When you see the sign for Theodore Roosevelt Area there will be two entrances one to the headquarters on the other is to the trail head. Go down the dirt road one or two hundred yards to the parking area for the trail head.

The hike will be about two miles in length, maybe three. But don't let the short distance fool you. Most of the trail is either up or down, nothing too steep just rolling. The area is mostly hard woods with a mix of tropical plants. Along the trail is some very nice views of the marsh so bring some binoculars. The trail is mostly jeep type trail with the exception of a very nice narrow path along the bluff over looking the marsh.

Some of the things to see along the trail are very interesting. We'll hike out to the birding tower overlooking Round Marsh. Round Marsh has been suggested that it was created in 1564 by a meteor impact. “ In August 1564, the hungry, miserable French settlers at Fort Caroline were stunned by a stroke of lightning that, one wrote, instantly consumed about 500 acres and burned with such a bright heat that the birds which lived in the meadows were consumed.” There is also the ruins of the old home that the namesake “Willie Browne” lived. We'll also pass the Browne family cemetery.

Please bring some bug spray, sun screen, a snack and water. Park rules require dogs to be on a leash. To make things interesting collect any paper, plastic or aluminum trash and whoever collects the must weight wins a prize. Please be safe and not leave the trail to collect any trash.

Come join us on this wonderful hike and burn some calories! Or just use this hike as an excuse to finish off the pumpkin pie when you get home.

This is one of my favorite hikes in Jax. It's great to actually have some ups and downs.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
