Cleveland Metroparks - North Chagrin Reservation
Willoughby Hills, OH
This will be a somewhat short but Supremely Unpleasant Hike. Not too fast-paced, but with some of the steepest, most rugged hills imaginable, on trails that are rarely used. There will be exhausting 45-degree climbs, slippery dirt and leaves, hidden roots to trip over, mud, places to scramble on all fours, fallen trees to crawl under, and Ebola-infected vampire bats as darkness falls. (OK, not the bats, but the rest is true.) Not suitable for children, or people that have trouble on long hills. And there's no good way to turn back halfway. Luckily, there will be flat trails in between the hills, to catch our breath. Two steep up-hills, two down-hills.
There will also be some of the best scenery in the area, with deep valleys full of fall colors, ending in a visit to the famous Squire's Castle itself. Bring a camera!
The hike will last around 60–90 minutes, depending on whether people choose to do the last hill or not. Flashlights could be useful at the end of the hike, but please keep them aimed down by your feet so you don't blind others.
Dinner or drinks at Aladdin's (close by) is optional afterward—people can decide when the time comes. There are other nearby options too.
We'll leave promptly at 6:00--if you're running late and want to try to catch up, you can post a note here and if I see it in time, I'll send you my cell number. We'll start by crossing the field and heading south. Gather at 5:45 to make sure you're not left behind! This is a joint meetup with the New In Town group.
In case of significant rain: by noon on the day of the hike I will decide if it needs to be rescheduled (maybe for a Sunday).
