Backstage Playhouse Square: Free Behind the Scenes Theater Tour

See Cleveland's Historic Theater District.  Tour guides will escort us through the theaters, backstage, and behind the scenes, telling the history, grandeur, decline and rebirth of Playhouse Square. The tour runs ninety minutes to two hours, begins with a brief video.

Playhouse Square is the country's largest performing arts district outside of New York City, and the largest theatre restoration project in the world. Over a million people attend performances each year in nine performance halls. The theaters were built in the 1920s, and extensive renovation began in the 1970s.

Playhouse Square staff tell me this is the best date to tour over the next several months, with backstage access to the most theaters.

Ask for the meetup group when you arrive. Parking is available in many lots, and street meters are free on Saturdays, but be careful to follow signs.

We will tour the theaters in two groups, one leaving 11:00 AM, the next leaving about 11:20 AM. You must be on time, if late for the 11:20 you may not be given a tour.

Lunch afterwards?

WOW!!! Wayyyyy exceeded expectations! This was a fabulous event. Luise was our tour guide. What a wealth of info. Thank you, Bill, for coming up with this idea and organizing it. And you picked the PERFECT day to do this. I couldn't think of one single thing I would have wanted to do outside today!

What a crowning jewel for the performing arts in our community. Our host Richard added so much to the experience with his passion for the renovations.

Playhouse Square has asked me if any one would like to take an earlier tour Saturday morning. They are short a couple of volunteer tour guides, and may be overloaded with visitors at 11 AM. The tours begin at 10:00 AM, and they expect to have more room for people coming shortly after 10 or around 10:30. You may miss meeting some of the Meetup epople, but will probably be in a smaller group and get a more personal tour.

If anyone can come early, please do. Some coming at 11:00 may be asked to wait for 11:20 as it is right now.

I can go to the 10. Do I just show up?

      January 31

    • Bill

Yes, please do. Look for others of us on other tours. We'll cross paths.

      January 31

  • Dave

Are most of us going to 11 o'clock I would like to meet as many people being I have only met a few members on a hike

    January 30

    • Bill

Hope you can arrive early, many others will be and we need to have people on different tours.

Anyone have any tips on parking for this event?

    January 30

    • Christine

There's also a parking lot right across the street on Euclid.

      January 30

    • Bill

The street meter sare free on Sat., but you may have to walk a bit.

Well... I guess some people just don't know a good time when they see one. My guest bailed on the event tomorrow. I'm going it alone! I am sure it will be awesome. Adjusted my count to free up another spot. Excited to meet some new faces :-) and learn a little history.

I've been to one of these tours before so someone on the wait list can have my spot

    January 30

  • Jan

How do we reserve a spot, I like to go to the first one.

    January 22

    • Bill

I see you are signed up, be sure to come by 11 AM.

      January 23

    • Jan

Bill, I decided not to come, hopefully someone can take my spot, I totally forgot I was in another group going.

      January 30

  • Jan

I can't go, hope someone can take my spot. I forgot I signed up for a tour with another group, seeing as thought this group was larger, It's best I not go to this one.

  • Bill M.

Sorry to miss this, but I have some family business to attend to. My loss is someone else's gain. Enjoy.

    January 29

  • Kim B.

Does the earlier tour allow room for those of us on the wait list?

    January 29

    • Bill

No, we are overfilled as it is. We can't add any more people.

      January 29

  • Sydney

Lynda, I signed up for myself and two more. One person has backed out, so it will be just two of us. Someone on your waiting list will be able to go. Thanks

I am going to cancel. I did mtheatre for may years so back stage for me would not be that big a deal. Let some one else attend. I'll catch it some other time.

    January 23

  • Sandy

is it possible to change to a YES,+1, knowing my plus one would be on the waiting list?

    January 21

    • Sandy

tried...it apparently will not accept. is there a way you can adjust this as the host?

      January 21

    • Bill

I don't know how to do that, anyone have a suggestion?

      January 22

  • Dave

What does the wait list mean that i go if someone cancels or can i go

    January 19

    • Lynda

Yes, when someone cancels, the next in line is automatically rsvp'd.

      January 20

  • Gretchen

This sounds like a very interesting outing! I've been to the playhouse many times but never been backstage.
