McCloud River Preserve

This is a Nature Conservancy protected trail that combines lush forests, a wide variety of pine and fir trees, a short side trip of .3 miles to a set of waterfalls on Fisher Creek, (water permitting....) wonderful scenery that follows the river, history and information provided by Nature Conservancy, along with several places to go swimming or just cool the heels along the trail that is 5.4 miles roundtrip.

After the hike we'll stop at the Goat restaurant in Mt. Shasta for a brew and burger, and leave time if anyone wants to visit McCloud, the century lumber town full of old world charm. The town itself is mostly contained in one long block full of interesting history and buildings.

We will meet at Shopco to form carpools. It was suggested at the last hike $10.00 is a fair amount to give the person driving. If you are meeting at the trailhead, directions are as follows.

Hiway 89 to McCloud. South 9 miles on Squaw Creek Road to the reservoir, staying above the lakes west shore. Turn right at the 11.4 mile mark onto road 38N53, (dirt road, 2 wheel). Left at the fork at 12 miles, straight at 13.8 mile mark. After passing Ah Di Na campground at the 17.4 mile mark, continue on until you are 18.5 miles and will come upon the parking.

It appears you were done just in time. They're reporting a mudslide off Mt. Shasta.

Every now and then a hike proves to be an unexpected challenge in difficulty, but equaled in scenic beauty. While only 5 1/2 miles in length, the trail was rocky which wears on the feet, the temperature far hotter than expected for a mostly shaded trail. The sound of the McCloud River swiftly passing by along with a sweet fragrance of the forest kept us company the entire time and made this hike one of the more memorable of the year. Finished up the day at the Goat in Mt. Shasta with a cold one.
    Thanks to all.

I am so happy there is room on this walk. I will need a ride in...as my car does not happily leave pavement. I would drive to Mt. Shasta, because I want to return in time for the music in Palo Cedro that was mentioned earlier. If I can be back by 6 or 6:30 that would be great. Will that be possible?

I would carpool with Suzanne Wall maybe from Redding, and be back by 4 PM??

Hubby didn't know I had signed up for this and went and bought Hoe Down tickets for Another Chance Animal Welfare in Palo Cedro. It starts Saturday at 5pm, so it would be too tight timewise for me to make it back. This is a Beautiful area that you are hiking to!!

Sounds good Kathy. Will be a bit late Friday, but will definitely arrive by 8:30.

Please update your status if you can't make it before Saturday morning. I hope to be on the road by 8:15 am, so it's helpful to know who isn't joining the hike.

I'm coming back to Redding right after the hike (skipping the after hike meal) because I'm coming back for the Beer and Wine Festival that starts at 4:00. If anyone needs to get back early, they can ride with me. (gold Subaru Outback)

The McCloud river Lodge is closed, and because of the fire in Weed we may have to come up with a plan for an after hike brew & burger on Saturday. The Goat in Mt. Shasta has outdoor seating, nice menu.

I looked up food places, have you been to Bartle Lodge, Wayside Grill or Cafe Maddalina? They have good reviews in case one sounds interesting. :-)

    • Al S.

Wayside is a possibility. The Goat said call ahead, so we'll see come game time. thanks

For all those on the waiting list- I will wait until Thursday and see if the number of hikers change, and then open the list to all that want to go. For many the hiking season is over, for most it never began, sooooo
