Big Lake & Horr Pond McArthur

This hike is a level, easy and up to 8 miles in length, following the shores of Big Lake or Horr Pond and Tule River. The entire area is part of the migratory route of several species of Canadian Geese, Blue Herons and maybe some Osprey.

We will probably follow the Horr Pond & Tule River route, covering 6 miles.

McArthur is about 74 miles from Redding on 299. The trailhead is another 3-4 miles. To reach the trailhead go 299 to McArthur, north on Main Street past the fairgrounds to a dirt road. At .5 mile go right and pass thru a gate. The road continues north another 3 miles to the parking area.

After the hike we can stop in McArthur or Fall River for a cold drink & burger before calling it a day and heading home.

What trail are you actually going to be on? As far as I know, the trails are Ahjumawi State Park, which is only accessible by boat. There is a road on the dike between Big Lake and the swamps. Is that what you are talking about?

Al - do you have a ballpark time when we'll return to Redding? Thanks.

    • Al S.

Mary Lynn, I'm sure you could be back by 3-4 pm?? The trailhead is 74 miles from Redding, so we should be on the trail by 10 am, walk till lunch, take a break, eat and head back?? That's without the after hike bull session of course....

Is this a bring a lunch and sit down to chill, relax and smell the roses half way? I may go and see how far my body will let me hike, and if only part way so be it and I'll wait for you all to hike back to my location... Okay?

I recommend you check the dates of hunting season. There is a lot of bird hunting on the lake and it may be deer season.

    • Al S.

David, Thanks for the heads up. We are on an established walking trail that follows the levee, in plain sight. Deer season is under way I know.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
