The Northern Light Zen Center is a Korean style Zen Buddhism based group that is part of the Kwan Um School of Zen. We meet every Wednesday nights (6:30 pm) for regular meditation practice which includes sitting, walking meditation, chanting, and a short Dharma reading. Practice takes place in our cozy Dharma room, that overlooks local farmland and fields of grass or corn. The Cathance river meanders in the distance

Northern Light Center was started in 1992 by several students of KUSZ under the guidance of the Kwan Um School of Zen. Our first guiding teacher, Chong Hae Su Nim, was ordained a monk in 1996 and received inka from Zen Master Seung Sahn on April 7, 2001. He provided the initial direction and encouragement for which we are very grateful.

Zen Master Seung Sahn is the 78th teacher in his line of dharma transmission which extends back through the Chogye Order to Taego Pou (1301 – 1382), a student and dharma heir of Shih-Wu in China. Upstream of Shih-Wu we meet Nan-yuan, Lin-chi, Huang-Po, Pai-Chang, Matsu, and Hui-Neng, the Sixth Patriarch, from whom all Zen schools trace their ancestry.

Our guiding teacher is Zen Master Soeng Hyang (Barbara Rhodes)  She is also the Zen Master and Guiding Dharma Teacher of the Kwan Um School of Zen. She received dharma transmission from Zen Master Seung Sahn on October 10, 1992. She was one of Zen Master Seung Sahn’s first American students and studied with him since 1972. She received inka in 1977. She helped found Providence Zen Center, and lived there for seventeen years, serving in a number of administrative capacities.

Practice is free and all are welcome, newcomers are asked to arrive 15- 30 minutes before formal practice begins for a brief orientation.
