Walkway Over the Hudson

A walk over the Hudson (twice!!) up in Poughkeepsie, New York with a walk in the woods (Fanny Reese State Park). This walk starts on the east side of the Hudson river at the Poughkeepsie Metro North station, heads west over the Walkway Over the Hudson (The Poughkeepsie Bridge) travels south a little bit into Fanny Reese State park for a walk in the woods, and returns to the east side via the Mid-Hudson Bridge, ending again at the Poughkeepsie Metro North station.

The Poughkeepsie bridge is 212 feet over the Hudson, and is roughly 1 1/4 miles long.

The Poughkeepsie Bridge was completed in 1889, it's design and purpose to carry rail freight across the Hudson. It was used as such through World War II, and slowly fell into disrepair in the 1960's with a reduction and redirection of freight traffic. Slated for demolition, an idea was proposed to convert it into a walkway(a proposal supported by owner Conrail, who eventually sold the bridge for $1, saving $20 million in demolition costs). The Walkway over the Hudson was finally opened in October, 2009. (source)

Getting There:

Option 1 - meet the group at Grand Central Terminal at 9:15am to catch a Metro-North train to Poughkeepsie. I'll be in the Main Concourse, right near the round info booth that has the Grand Central Terminal Clock on top. We'll catch a 9:43am train to Poughkeepsie, arriving at 11:30am.  Round trip fare is $34.00 - Buy your ticket in Grand Central at one of the ticket machines. DO NOT buy your ticket on the train, you will be charged a surcharge ($7 or $8 dollars more).

Option 2 - Meet the group at Poughkeepsie at 11:30am. I'll have the group waiting outside the station under the awning in the picture. If you are driving up, or taking Metro-North from a different station, please drop me a message through Meetup so we can coordinate.

Returning - On weekends Metro-North runs trains to Grand Central once an hour. I'd say to expect to be back in Manhattan no earlier than 7:45pm.

This will be about a 5 mile round trip walk, beginning and ending at the Poughkeepsie Metro-North train station. Please note that we will be walking on sidewalks, crossing streets, going up a few flights of stairs, crossing two bridges, possible walking on the side of a road, and walking on woods trails in Fanny Reese.

Please dress appropriately for the weather, we will be outside for at least 5 to 6 hours.  Sneakers or light hiking boots are recommended.

Bring water, snacks and lunch. Depending on time, we will stop in Fanny Reese for lunch (nice overlooks of the Hudson).

Restrooms - restrooms should be available at Poughkeepsie train station, and at the west Walkway entrance. No restrooms are available on the bridges (unless you want to get a ticket...) or in Fanny Reese (lots of trees though...)

$5 fee to cover organizing costs -does not include train fare, you have to get this yourself! :)

Enjoyed the walk on the Walkway a lot. Got to take many photos of The Walkway, The Mid Hudson Bridge & Hudson River Scenery including a freight train on the Ulster Side of the Hudson River that was on that ground. Also enjoyed the hike between bridges & the other people that came of which some of them helped me out with a lot of things.

    Kelly,
yea, bummer on the group thing ... there is a train at Marble Hill at 9:40am that gets into Poughkeepsie at 11:30am. You would have to transfer at Tarrytown (getting on the same train that the group is catching at Grand Central)
But- double check the MTA-Metro-North website a few days before the hike in case there are schedule changes, etc.

Ahhh...I didn't know it was an advanced purchase thing. I thought we could do it right then and there for whomever wanted to participate, but never mind!

Do you know if this line/train stop at the Marble Hill stop in the Bronx right over the bridge?

    Edward,
Please look for us just outside the main lobby, under the awning (see the picture above) - the group should be there a little after 11:30am, assuming the train arrives on time. (wait for us in case the train is late)

Unfortunately advance reservations are required for group tickets (at least 2 weeks).

I will not buy group tickets. The risk to me being stuck with numerous unpaid tickets is far too high.

Hi, I just read the post, below, about purchasing group metro north tickets. If you decide to do that, I DON'T want to be included. I need to see what the weather will be on that day first, and I'll get to Grand Central in enough time to purchase tickets from the machine that day.

Hi Peter. Have you ever purchased the group metro north tickets? I save it mentioned on the mta website http://web.mta.info/mta/fares/MNRValueTables_rev2.html

for groups of 10 or more = saving up to 50%

Sounds like a good deal. What do you think? Since we're all meeting at Grand Central.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
