Gun ownership is a hot topic for a good reason. NoVES member, Sven Sinclair, an economist who has given several thoughtful talks at NoVES, will discuss the ethical issues, myths, and costs and benefits of various policies surrounding gun control.
Maybe you're one of those people who sits in a church pew on Sundays thinking to themselves, "I don't believe a word of this." Or perhaps you've checked out of the dogma arguments altogether, avoid church or temple and just to try living a good, decent life. Or maybe you don't believe in god but instead seek an ethical path consistent with your understanding of the universe.
If any of those sound like you, we should meet! We're the Northern Virginia Ethical Society, a congregation composed of people unified by a simple faith: we want to make the world a little bit better. Founded in the 19th Century, Ethical Societies believe that bringing out the best in others brings out the best in themselves as well. We also believe in science, reason, and you. We don't focus on an afterlife or final judgment: our duty is to the living, and to the future generations who will follow us.
Northern Virginia Ethical Society meets on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. from September to June. These meetings, which we call platforms, usually consist of a talk by an expert on a topic of interest to Ethical Humanists. While you're enjoying the platform, your child can attend Sunday School, which teaches them a humanist approach to living. Our Sunday School is offered without charge.
Our meetings take place at the Green Hedges School, 415 Windover Avenue, NW, Vienna, VA 22180. For driving directions and more information about NoVES, please visit the website, www.noves.org. We are also on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/ethicalsociety.
