IHEU and NHA announce details of 18th World Humanist Congress
IHEU, in association with member organization the Norwegian Humanist Association announces that the 18th World Humanist Congress is to be held in Oslo, Norway, on August 12-14, 2011. The main Congress theme is "Humanism and Peace". Read more
Nigerian Court Rejects Case against Humanist Campaigners
Nigerian Humanists have won the latest round in an ongoing battle with witch hunters. The Federal High Court in Calabar has struck out the case brought against Leo Igwe, IHEU's Representative in West Africa, by Helen Ukpabio of the Liberty Gospel Church. Read more
Stephen Fry Joins British Humanist Membership Boom
The British Humanist Association (BHA) has welcomed the author, comedian, presenter, and director Stephen Fry to its membership and as a Distinguished Supporter of Humanism. The news comes during a busy membership drive month in which the BHA has announced that it has doubled in size in the last five years, to 10,000 members, and wants to double again--in just half the time. White House Meets with American Humanists For First Time
For the first time in history a US administration has met with the American nontheist community for a policy briefing. The Feb. 26 meeting between White House staff and leaders of the Secular Coalition for America focused on the top public policy issues of the nontheist community, including ending proselytizing in the US military, improving the government���s 'faith-based initiative', and protecting children from neglect and abuse that can occur due to a lack of government oversight over faith-healing treatment providers. An international atheist conference will bring activists from around the world to Denmark from June 18 to 20, 2010, to explore the intersection between religion and politics. Read more
Secular London Protests Papal Visit
Demonstrators gathered in London on Sunday, 14 February 2010 under the banner ���No Pope, No Vatican ��� London for a Secular Europe���. There was an additional reason to demonstrate in London this year. It has just been announced that the Pope is to visit Britain later in the year in a state visit, funded by the Government, rather than as a pastoral visit funded by the Church. Read more
IHEU Member Blacklisted By Iran
One of IHEU's Dutch member organization, HIVOS (the Humanist Institute for Development Cooperation), is being targeted by the Islamic regime in Iran. Read more
Catholics take credit for UK backtrack on Sex Education
The British Humanist Association (BHA) has reacted to the news that the Catholic Education Service has claimed the credit for a Government amendment to the Children, Schools and Families Bill that will deprive children of their right to broad, balanced and objective Sex and Relationships Education. Qatar Rejects Appeals to Respect Human Rights
The appalling lack of human rights in even the most liberal of Islamic States was highlighted this week when Qatar rejected the following recommendations made by member states of the Human Rights Council. Those not entitled to the full enjoyment of their human rights in Qatar include women, the children of mixed marriages, and���of course���homosexuals. Read more
Progress on UK Law Against Caste Discrimination
The UK Government appears to be edging closer to outlawing discrimination on the grounds of caste. It is hoped this can be included in an Equality Bill currently under consideration by Parliament. Caste discrimination provisions were not in the original draft of the bill, and Hindu leaders had claimed that caste discrimination was not a problem in Britain despite substantial evidence to the contrary. But government ministers have indicated an openness to consider the matter as a result of some powerful lobbying. Read more
Humanists Praise President Obama for His Remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast
The American Humanist Association (a founding member organization of the International Humanist and Ethical Union) has praised President Obama's comments at the National Prayer Breakfast, expressing gratitude that in his remarks the President included and commended nontheists among those who are leading relief efforts in Haiti. "The compassion and decency of the American people is expressed��� by Americans of every faith, and no faith, uniting around a common purpose, a higher purpose," Obama stated at the event this morning, 4 Feb. 2010. Protests Planned for Pope Visit to UK
The National Secular Society (an IHEU member organization in the UK) has announced a large-scale campaign of protest against the state visit of the Pope to Britain in September. Read more

A girl born today can expect to live for more than 80 years if she is born in some countries, but less than 45 years if she is born in others. Read more
