Grafting Invasive Bradford Pears to Produce Fruit

Learn a useful horticultural skill, and try transforming an invasive "Bradford" pear into a fruiting pear.

Registration required at

Cost: $40

Description: This workshop will include a review of the tools, techniques and benefits of bark grafting. Each participant will have the opportunity to try making a graft. We will also observe year-old grafts to see how they grow.

Grafting is a horticultural technique of joining two plants together in order to benefit from the positive traits of the two plants. For example, invasive Callery pears are vigorous but they make tiny, inedible fruit. By cutting this tree and grafting on wood from a fruiting pear, we can produce good fruit on a strong existing root.

Location: The forest garden is in the field next to D&S General Store and Gas Station located at 3507 Enterprise Road, Bowie, MD 20721. When you see the gas station, you're very close. There is a yellow gate 100' south of the gas station. Looking at the gas station from the road, the gate is to your right, somewhat hidden in the trees. Drive through the yellow gate into the field. Parking is to the left. Walk around the big field clockwise to come into the fenced forest garden area. We'll gather under the canopy where we will have a sign in sheet, water jug, and a brief orientation. Please dress appropriately for the outdoors!

Hi, we had a great time yesterday, but can't make it next time. In case the person I was talking to about an Indian Youtube permaculture video reads this, or anyone else who may be interested, it's: Create Abundance the Superhero way. Great youtube video.
