East Sleeper (3840') is a peak in the Sandwich Mountain Range in the White Mountains. It is on the New England Hundred Highest list. We will hike 11.8 miles for approximately 8 hours, climbing 2600' in elevation. Leaving from the Downes Brook Trailhead on the south side of the Kancamagus Highway, we will go 5.1 miles on the Downes Brook Trail, turn NW on the Kate Sleeper Trail for .8 miles, take the East Sleeper spur trail and return via the same route. If there is interest, on the way back we could tag Mt. Whiteface for an extra 1.6 miles. This is an advanced hike with close to 10 water crossings, all participants must have 10+ mile hike experience.
East Sleeper Mountain and the Kate Sleeper Trail are named for a local innkeeper, Katherine Sleeper Walden, who was active in preventing the area from being logged.
