Sunrise hike on Wachusett Mountain

Rise and shine, sleepy heads! Sunday morning at 2am you get to turn the clocks BACK an hour, enabling you to get an extra hour of sleep. Perfect timing then to get up extra early the day before to watch the sunrise from atop Wachusett Mountain. (Provided the sun isn't totally obscured by clouds that is) Sunrise Saturday morning is approximately 7:22am in Worcester. I'd like to plan on being on the summit about a half hour before that in order to watch the sky begin to lighten just before the sun does rise. (That means be prepared for cool weather at the top as we sit and wait!)

What you'll need to bring:

*Flashlight or headlamp. It'll be dark in them woods!

*Liquid refreshment for the hike/summit. A thermos of hot coffee or cocoa would probably be great at the summit!

*Clothing that keeps you warm. Morning temps are probably going to be at or around freezing with the chance of a breeze on top of the mountain.

*A good sense of humor. Who else would get up in the wee hours of the morning to go for a walk in the dark?

We will park on Westminster Road (where the closed Administration Road begins) and take Echo Lake, High Meadow, Jack Frost, and Mountain House trails to get to the summit. We can return by the same route as well.

Distance: Roughly 4 miles total

Time: 4 hours or so depending on summit time

Elevation gain: About 650 feet

Wonderful company on my first sunrise hike. I've hiked up to watch the sunset, but this was my first time hiking up the trails in the pitch black to watch the sun rise. Unique. Interesting. Quiet. The trails are so very different when it is dark. Getting to the summit a bit early offered some great vantage points of the city lights. Trying to figure out which city each group of lights belonged to was fun as well. Another point of interest is the way things look when the sun is very low in the horizon. I think it makes for a better view of things. Thank you Mary for joining us!

I had a wonderful experience. I've never hiked in the dark and Terry taught me some great skills. Thank you!

Pauline, best directions I can offer is to take the Route 140 SOUTH exit off of Rt 2. Follow 140 Sourh a couple miles until you fins the sign for Wachusett Mntn ski area on your right. Take that right and follow that road. Do not bear to the right to enter the ski area, rather stay left in what should be Mountain Road. Continue past the Wachusett Mountain visitors center ans in roughly a mule or so there is a very sharp right. That is Westminster Road. Take that shape eight and follow the road maybe a half mile. On a turn in the road there is a parking area on the right. That's our starting point. I will be there in a silver Corolla.

OK, folks... Weather Channel is calling for partly cloudy tonight with low temp of 41 degrees (balmy?) with clear skies tomorrow morning. Personally, I'd like a few clouds to try to capture the differing colors of sunrise, but I'll settle for anything that doesn't involve rain.
See you brave and crazy folks tomorrow morning. Hike steps off as close to 5:00am as possible.
[masked] if you are running a little late.

It's not a very aggressive hike, Mary. A couple steeper spots, but they're relatively short lived. I tend to take quite a few rest breaks as well.

Just wondering how the trails are? Specifically is it easy to trip on them?

      Will hiking poles be necessary?

      November 1, 2013

They can be good for balance. I rarely use them, but some folks swear by them.

I'll be watching the weather forecast closely in the next couple days. Weather Channel has danced around the possibility of showers Friday, Friday night, and Saturday morning all wee. Now they are listing rain for just Friday. By Friday evening we should have a better idea...

Another suggestion... Consider hand warmers. Anybody who has done this, feel free to offer additional suggestions as well please.

Even crazier would be arriving at Logan Airport around midnight arriving home at 1 am and then getting up at 3 am to hike in the snow

I have made my kids wake up to see sunrise at the Grand Canyon, Arcadia , outer banks of NC. ... But I have never made them walk two miles in the dark to see it. I must be crazy to consider getting up at 3:30 to do this

Apparently "crazy" is pretty common in this group. At least 7 crazypeople already...
