Explore Erving Castle/Hermit's Cave

I could hike Thursday or Friday, morning to mid-day preferred, thinking of trying to find the Hermit's "Castle" in Erving. Looks to be about a 3-4 hour hike, anyone interested?

Awsome day!, Weather looked a bit daunting as I left Gardner by car to drive to Erving; but it improved continously thru the day. The hike was enjoyable great, and scenery fantastic. It was an easy paced 5 miles over varying trail conditions traversing down and up perhaps 500 feet. We walked thru at least 3 differnt species of forest trees, explored the legendary Erving Castle nestled in some unique rock ledges. We heard the story of the Hermit who lived on the hill for many years. We then journeyed up the hill and along the ridge that presented some fantastic views overlooking the Millers River. The other hikers are really cool people and I am sure I will see them again; Thanks for a truely enjoyable day!

Having done this hike in the summer, might I recommend that instead of returning up the steep switchbacks the way you came, continue past the "castle" on the spur trail until it connects again with the M+M trail. Turn right and follow the top of the cliffs for some great views of the river valley. I think you'll be glad you did!

Hopefully Friday is a good day for everyone, a few people are meeting at Riverfront Park in Orange at 9:30, otherwise we can just meet on Mountain Road at 10. Wear bright colors and bring water and snacks.

Hi Pam - I would love to see this site - I had read about it awhile back but never got there. Do you want to shoot for Friday, and I could meet you in Athol somewhere around 9am? Do you know where this is, or is it a secret, hard-to-find site?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
