Wachusett Evening Hike Every Wednesday.

With the days getting shorter and peoples work schedules not allowing earlier start times I'm going to continue with a 6:30pm start time from this point forward. This means hikes will be taking place at night and into full darkness. We'll no longer be able to be on the summit for sunset.

All hikers are required to bring a light to attend. Hikes will be 2-3 miles. Hikes occur rain or shine. All attendees should wear proper clothing and be prepared for cold weather particularly on the summit. I'd recommend a minimum of 1 liter of water.

Guests are allowed and encouraged. This is a moderate hike. People of all skill levels attend. We stop at each intersection to allow hikers of all speeds to catch up and rest as needed.

Dogs are allowed on this hike. Mine attends each week. The park requires animals be leashed and are picked up after. The enforcement of this is rather lax. I ask you simply be respectful of other hikers, don't leave a mess on the trail and keep your dog under control.

The starting points from this point forward will be announced in the comments each week. It will be one of three places. Ski Area, State Park, or Administration Rd.

Directions:

Administration Rd starting point: Follow Mountain Rd. about a mile past the Visitors Center/Auto Rd. to Westminster Rd. Westminster Rd. will be on your right, just after the Fernside B&B (Yellow building on your left)
Continue down Westminster Rd. about 3/8 mile, Trail head on your right at the bottom of Administration Rd.

State Park: The State park entrance is on Mountain Rd between the ski area and Westminster Rd. The sign is clearly visable from the road.DO NOT park in the visitors center parking lot, they close the gates to it before we;d complete our hikes. Parking is available in the lower lot. When they close the gates for the season we can park around the driveway so long as we don't block the gates.

Ski area: The ski area is off mountain Rd. Multiple signs lead the way. Until ski season starts we'll be meeting in the main lot, parking against the woods on the unpaved section of the lot. The trail head is signed and is the starting point.

Have a good walkabout! I won't make it these next couple weeks, but do have some conference events down thataway in MAR and APR, so I'll stay tuned in and watch your start times. Do you all hike this year-round or do you try to stay off the trails in mud season? Do you HAVE a mud season? Everyone should have a mud season...

Started this as a sunset hike over the summer. Plan is to continue it year round. When long days allow we schedule to be on the summit for sunset.

Expect icy trails and very cold temperatures(sub 0) Looking at a little longer route than normal(4.5 miles about a mile longer than normal) Hiking the the west side trail head and climbing to the summit from there.
