An Evening with Photographer John MacLean

Abe's Deli (map)

Selected By: Paul LeGrand

Join us for an evening with a favorite guest speaker, Architectural Photographer and Digital Imaging Expert John Mac Lean.  You can see his work at http://www.johnmaclean.com, and visit his facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/JohnScottMacLean (like!)

John's presentation will show the possibilities that await you with Lightroom 4 Beta and RAW files!  His passion for the beauty of nature, combined with his  scientific mind, will guarantee an evening filled with rich knowledge.  Reserve your spot early, as this meeting is likely to max out the room.  John has been one of our most popular presenters and is back for an encore.

For those of you joining us for the first time, our regular monthly meeting hangout is Abe's Deli's banquet room in Northridge.  Meeting kicks off at 7:00, with dinner and a speaker.  This is one you won't want to miss.

The venue doesn't charge us for the banquet room, however they include an 18% gratuity on your check for group meetings, and they ask that you please place a minimum order of $6.50. You order a-la-carte and get your own tab.  Meals at Abe's Deli are reasonably priced, and the portions are typically big. Most of our members order an entree, but if you're on a budget, you can always do coffee & dessert.  Either way, you won't want to miss this one!

I'd like to see more of your photos! Once you take that perfect photo, how do you prepare it for an extra large (bigger than 16 x 20)(er way bigger like large building lobby size). Do you adjust pixels? size? DPI? Where would you get it printed? Do you have night outdoor photos to share? Do you have any long exposure night shots? I heard the beta is out for Lightroom 4. Are there many changes? Could you share? Are there any new printing or enhancing techniques for Gallery Presentations?

Thanks Lynn, I'll digest that and come up with a game plan. Can someone tell me what the projector resolution is? It's hard to show Lightroom on 800x600.

    Ha Helaine!

John, I'd like to see you take an image from start to finish, describe the tools you're using, and show the image at several stages during processing.

Dusty, I kind of did that at the last meeting when I demoed LR3 using the member's images on the 30"display I brought. I'd really need a high res display that's big enough to show everyone, and 30" was actually not big enough. Projection would be good, again if there's enough res. Can anyone tell me the specs?

Got it, John. I don't know the specs.

Hey John. Can I post an update to the meeting anouncement yet?

    Hi Paul,

I've been trying to get an answer about the projection. Can you answer it? It will determine what and how I present.

    Thanks,
    John

I've got my 600x800 projector if that helps.

Ok, I won't be able to show LR then. It's an app that likes a lot of res to have room for the side panels and a bigger image.

    I can do something else.

How about discussing lens filters and then correcting colors in LR3 or PS?

    Hi Bob,

The only filters I use for digital are ND and polarizing filters. Do people still use color correcting filters with digital?

I meant fixing color problems ND filter causes.

Any possibility of a waiting list, just in case anyone cancels? I would like to be on it, if it should happen. Thanks.

Hi all, I just got ahold of Mark Nicholas from the South Bay Photo Group. He granted me use of his hi res projector and Mike Keeler from Weldon Color Lab is going to let me use his MacBook Pro and load Lightroom 4 Beta on it. So, if your club has a nice BIG screen, then lets do a presentation on LR 4 Beta. I'll bring images to edit and show the best bits of the app, except for the Maps feature, because I have a Canon (no GPS)!

@Bob W, I don't have a really dense ND filter, but if you have any RAW files from a heavy ND exposure, then I'll be happy to demo it.

Thanks all! I actually felt like I was floundering to be honest. The constant beta software crashing was throwing off my flow! I will come back when LR4 is shipping and I'll reformat my presentation to my workflow from capture to finished output. Maybe I can do a live tethered portrait/headshot setup and cover lighting and processing all in one session.

If you'd have me back, I would love to give it a go.

Thanks for having me this time too!

John, I am a LR3 user and am excited about upgrading to LR4! One great thing that I learned is that I can do tethered captures. I am currently shooting a jewelry project and tried it out tonight - awesome!!!
