Extended Meditation Practice & Support @ NSUC

All teachers agree: The key to a successful meditation practice is regular practice. Therefore this meetup is looking for practitioners who are willing to make a dedicated effort to sit together weekly in order to fully realize the benefits of group practice. All levels and schools of thought are welcome. Meet like minded individuals while expanding your own personal practice in a non-competitive and supportive environment. Feel free to join us for a sitting and experience increased self awareness and inner peace by way of your journey inward.

TIME: Our meeting time will be 7:00pm so please arrive as close to 7:00pm as possible. We will begin our meditation promptly at 7:15pm. This meetup should end by approximately 9:30pm.

LOCATION: North Shore Unitarian Church (NSUC) is located in Deerfield on Half Day Road (Route 22) 1 mile west of Waukegan Road and 1/2 mile of the I-94 Tollway on the north side of the street. The church shares a driveway with 3000 Half Day Road. Look for their sign as you approach the building. Once you’ve turned into the driveway, you’ll take an immediate right to enter the church campus. The front door is in the back! Ample parking will be available at no cost. If you think that you might need some additional help locating us, please feel free to contact me prior to the closing of RSVP's & I will be happy to provide you with my cell #.

FORMAT: We will begin with a short centering exercise, introductions, some brief instruction and several basic yoga stretches before beginning our formal practice which is described as follows: We will sit in silence for two thirty minute sessions focusing on our breath as the meditation object. We will perform one period of walking meditation between these two sessions. When we finish there will be a shared reading or audio presentation, time for questions, reflection and mingling for those who would like to participate.

FYI: Chairs will be available for those who prefer to use them. For those who choose to sit on the floor please bring your own, meditation bench, pillow, yoga mat or zafu cushion.

COST: A voluntary donation of $1.00 to help offset expenses would be most appreciated but is by no means expected.

If you have any questions about this particular sitting or our meditation community in general, please feel free to contact me. I am looking forward to sitting in practice and sharing energy in the present moment with all who choose to attend. Namaste, Mark Z

Grateful to all for their willingness to be flexible last night. Another wonderful example of simply being with the "isness" of the present moment. Welcome Carmen, John & Maria! So happy that y'all decided to join us. Also appreciated your contributions to our discussion. Welcome back Eva! We missed your energy. Always a joy to simply breath & walk with everyone. Namaste!

Sorry I didn't notice your message Evelyn, I was out of town and went straight to the Church after picking up my meditation gear. In the future just feel free to join us, we'll make room if need be.

Tonight was a great meditation experience. I loved the energy in the room and the conversations with our new meditators. Sorry I had to leave early but I had to leave early. I had a date with frozen yogurt.

Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.

Assuming you do get out of bed in the morning, splash cold water on your face, rinse out your mouth, put on some comfortable clothes (or stay in your sleeping clothes if you want), and immediately sit on your cushion. Do this before you have coffee, before you turn on the computer, before you activate your day and realize you don’t have time for this. Burn a stick of incense to time yourself, or use a clock or one of the many excellent meditation timers now on the market (which will prevent clock-watching). Decide in advance to sit for twenty to thirty minutes. A bit more is good if you can do it. Try this for two weeks, taking a day or so off each week. If you miss a day, that’s OK. Don’t fall into the unconscious trap that “Since I missed a day, I guess I can’t do this, so I might as well not even try, or try less hard tomorrow because this missed day has weakened me.” This is the way we think! So anticipate this and don’t fall for it. Be gentle with yourself, but firm. Imagine that you are training a chi
