Are you just starting out?  Have you been playing for a few years and just want to find someone to strum a few tunes with and get better? Are you experienced but like to help others learn and want to make new friends to play with?

The purpose of this group is to get together ( regardless of your age ) and play / learn some songs so that you meet other players, feel comfortable playing in front of a group, and maybe get good enough to play an open mic at a coffeehouse or wherever.

Please bring a song you'd like to play with copies, including words and chords.  Depending on who attends and ability levels, we'll pick the songs to do that day.  Please bring a capo.

As the organizer, I have a few requests:

  • Please be on time.  If you are going to be late, let us know as it stops us from waiting.
  • If you RSVP, please honor your RSVP so that we know how many are attending.  If you can't make it, change your RSVP and/or call me. My cell number will be on each meetup.
  • I will ask for a $2 donation at each meetup to help cover meetup organizing costs.  If you have financial challenges, let me know and we'll see what we can do.

Looking forward to meeting all of you, playing, and learning!

People often email to ask me what it's like before they come the first time.  Here's a brief description I sent out recently...

We typically work on songs that are relatively easy - mostly 1st position chords.  Some of us sing, many don't.  Some songs in the recent past  included Layla - Eric Clapton, Ain't No Grave - Johnny Cash, some U2, folk songs from the 60's (think Peter, Paul and Mary), Eagles, a couple of easy to strum originals (some of us write songs), You Ain't Goin' Nowhere - Dylan, etc. We've had Irish folks songs, rock songs, current songs (although no Justin Bieber yet...maybe this week...;-) ), and even Monty Python's "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life".  A quirky collection.

Usually we have folks each bring a song with chords on on page, and ask that folks bring 10 copies to pass around.  If you are just unsure the first time, feel free to not bring one, but it's pretty casual.  Usually we ask the person who brought it to lead the first time through, but if they are more beginner level, we usually have some more experienced folks who can do so.  Often we'll stumble through the song once, and those who can may take turns on a lead break.  If we have someone who can show us a lead position (box or structure) or a way to travel up the neck in that key, we may do so. We work on playing together, and "giving space" when needed. Sometimes we discuss new chords or positions, theory, transposition, or strum patterns. Then we'll go through it again, and it usually sounds pretty good.  Some folks provide leadership and help those who need it. Some just want to practice. Some just want to meet more guitar players. There are a variety of reasons people come.

Levels range from early beginner (still trying to learn and/or keep up with basic chord transitions) to folks who have been playing 30 years or more (but maybe not so much with others - hence the desire to play in a group like this) and some who like to teach a bit. You should bring a capo, and if you have a portable music stand, that can help, or you can just share.  Group size is usually between 10-12 folks, more or less.

I encourage you to just try it once.  We have no judgment. It's just a lot of fun, and a lot less pressure than a "jam session with vets" or an open mic.  Great folks.  I encourage you and hope you'll give it a try!
