The Ethical Slut: A Practical Guide to Polyamory, Open Relationships

Let's commune and discuss the often controversial topic of non-monogamy.The group has decided on "The Ethical Slut: A Practical Guide to Polyamory, Open Relationships & Other Adventures" by Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy for the second Meet-up of Not Your Momma's Book Club. Here is a synopsis of the book from Goodreads.com:

If you've ever yearned for love, sex, and intimacy beyond the limits of conventional monogamy, The Ethical Slut will open you up to infinite possibilities. Relationship pioneers Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy dispel myths about sluthood and show you how to maintain a successful polyamorous lifestyle through open communication, emotional honesty, and safer-sex practices. Well, I finally finished reading "The Ethical Slut" and I'm not overly impressed. I'm seriously re-thinking the whole alternating fiction/non-fiction set-up of this group. I have to be honest with myself: no matter how hard I try, non-fiction and me just don't seem to connect. *sigh*

Emphasis on the "dry"; very weak on the "how-to" - unless you're living in San Francisco, I suppose. I did like how they were inclusive to all lifestyles/genders/orientations but I found it ended up greatly diluting the message. I do look forward to the discussion on Sunday - especially since I know there are people attending who fall into both sides of the monogamy/non-monogamy categories. It should be interesting (and in case it isn't, at least the selection of beer at Pub Italia is wonderful.)

Oh, and I took the liberty of adding a +1 to your RSVP as a spot opened up and I'd like to keep the numbers accurate. Hope that's ok. :)

Wonder what you weren't impressed with, Thea. Although I haven't finished the book, and can't attend the discussion, I thought they did a good job in their treatment of jealousy, slowing down and dissecting the core of those feelings. Still have to read the rest.

"Jealousy" was the one chapter I actually liked, Joyce. My issue with non-fiction books of this sort, in general, is that they tend to be relevant only to those people who are living through very specific circumstances. Even though non-monogamy is a topic that is very relevant to my life, I just didn't find it added much "newness" or insight beyond what I have been able to learn through my own experiences. I know others who love the book, though. My opinion is just that - my opinion. (And I love it when people disagree with my opinion. It helps keep me humble.)

Have to withdraw from this one unfortunately. Sorry to all for the late notice but it's my Birthday and my kids want me around for a change. Have fun (I know you will)

Any chance I could mooch a copy of the book. I downloaded it on line but god that's a bad way for me to read a book. I'm always dropping the laptop in the bath when I fall asleep. :) Mike is going from Orleans tonight to the dinner and a movie and could bring it to me if anyone can part with theirs and has been the teacher's pet and read it already.

It probably won't make a difference. I will be electrocuted in my bathtub with my laptop. if one comes available, I would love it thank you.

Speaking about subtlety, we probably are all complicated yet simple-minded, paradoxical beings. I don't know what you can recall, but here are two of my situations:

      1) Being an OCTranspo bus rider, I have an impression/opinion that the riders on Express 6x are somewhat a better group (cleaner, better mannered) than those on regular 9x buses. But yesterday, when I was holding my breath on a smelly 96 and thinking how ugly a short guy 3 rows away from me was, he smiled and let a lady take a seat that he could have taken. immediately realized actually how unkind my thought was. That's how easy one can simplify a complicated situation (including calling others slutty while having a, slutty mind, so to speak).

      2) I don't like to swear but I'd love to learn how to talk erotic/dirty. How do I reconcile this? :)

Just FYI, it appears that it is relatively easy to find a free PDF version of this month's book selection. Try Google or send a message to our member, Rob. He's offered to send a link to those who request it. :)

Great title! Will read this anyway. Can't make the date as it's another yoga weekend for me. But I'm keeping my foot in the door here.
