RE: [Nottingham-Italian-Language-Conversation-Group] The future of the group

Sorry if I have not replied yet – I would of course love the group to carry on. I am not a fan of Facebook and they are in big legal trouble at the moment for not respecting their members privacy at all - a simple good search and you will see that the EU Commission is suing them big time. Sorry the lawyer speaking here… So I’d prefer another medium if at all possible. That’s of course my personal preference and I’ll understand if the group chooses this option. I know Facebook may be free but there is a price to pay for that! But if we all paid ?2 or so per year and had a good alternative to facebook I’d be happy to pay my ?2.

I think an easy solution will be to create a group in facebook and make it so we monitor it .

If you are happy with that I can sort something out and take it from there.

Hi Chris,

Please count me in also. There aren't enough language groups specialising in Italian in the area and it would be a shame to lose this one. As I am trying to get my work to sponsor me for further language tuition I will continue to come along to future meetings.

Best wishes
Karine

(I never know how the Meet Up emails work so if this has not gone to everyone can you pse forward it)

Just returned from holiday and seen your e-mail.

No surprise at all that you are having to give priority to your family - and quite right too!

I tried creating a dummy group just to see what it costs and this seemed to show that it is $144/?100 for 6 months  - did you pay all this yourself - if so that was extremely generous.

It would be a shame if the group folded, especially as Jacqueline has come up with a very good idea that could form a basic thread running through a year's events.

The website says there are 99 members, so that would be about ?2 each for a year, assuming:

  • all continued as members
  • all members paid the ?2

In practice there would probably be a load of hassle in actually collecting the ?2s, even if someone forked out the membership fee up front.

Maybe one way forward is to call a Meet up somewhere where we can discuss how best to proceed, as to try and do it by e-mail would be very onerous.

What do you think?

Regards

Chris

Dear Nottingham Italian Conversation Group Members,

Since the birth of my first son, I've had very little time to plan any meetups for the group and I also have to be more careful with my budget. As a result, I've decided not to renew my meetup subscription when it expires in September.

This means, meetups can continue to be scheduled my myself and others until mid September, but for them to continue thereafter, someone or some people will need to take over running the group instead of me. If anyone is interested in this and would like to know more, please get in touch and I'd be happy to discuss all the details with you.

If anyone has any other ideas about the group, please also get in touch. Other platforms (facebook, ning etc) offer a similar (free, but less extensive) facility for organising meetups and these could be an option, if there was support for such a wholesale switch.

Best wishes,
Edward
