The Sherwood Forest Wood-firing Society are giving folk the chance to try raku. http://www.osnotts.co.uk/sherwood-forest/sherwood-forest-wood-firing-society
It's a fun process where you glaze a pot (which they'll sell you) and watch it fired up to over 1100C before being dropped into sawdust in a dramatic ball of flames. The finished pot could be a masterpiece of crackled white, smokey charcoal greys and beautiful iridescent metallic blues, greens and copper tones. We did this with the society a couple of years ago and it was great fun. It's a low tech no-nonsense introduction to raku for just £3 per pot. There was an interesting art exhibition and some nice art shops in Thoresby courtyard, and we enjoyed a wonderful picnic in the sunshine. With a bit of luck the weather will improve and we can do something similar on Sunday.
