Local Walk (Nottingham)

By popular demand here we go with walk number 2 for the year, this time being a bit more local, as the start point is just 6 miles from the City Centre of Nottingham, the starting point is from the 'Travellers Rest' pub car park off the B684 (Mapperley Plains).

Back in the late 19th century, the 'Travellers Rest' pub was a halfway house for goose-herders on their way to the Goose Fair.

This walk will consist of just under 12 km and will visit: Mapperley Plains, Lambley Dumbles, Lambley, Woodborough and Dorket Head.

This is part of a popular walking area and we shall also pass through some quaint villages and on towards the end of the walk we will pass a significant location that is believed to be where Nottingham's roots originates from.

And now for the usual:

As always make sure you are prepared for this walk.
You will need:

• Walking boots - as being Autumn the ground could be wet and slippery in places.
• Warm clothes, Layers are good, (Jeans aren’t recommended as if they get wet they become heavy, lightweight breathable trousers are better).
• Waterproofs are essential,
• Snacks, Sweets etc.
• Adequate water or soft drinks
• Hats and gloves are always useful and worth packing in the cooler months,

The route is a well-trodden path an average fitness level would be helpful and a sense of humour is essential,

PLEASE BRING A PACKED LUNCH - we will stop along the route for Lunch, I shall try to arrange it to be near a shop but can’t confirm this as depends on pace and timings. So please be self-sufficient for food and the day.

Once we return to the pub car park at the end of the walk, I think a refreshing drink to round the day and walk off would be appreciated, I certainly would like to sample their hospitality out.

Like usual any questions, feel free to message me or contact me via[masked]

how inconsiderate to my walk, they could of gone bust tomorrow instead - but anyone going by bus then the option is the 'city council bus' (56) temporary stop (due to road works on Milton street) is now south sherwood street which is the street from the cornerhouse to the orange tree pub

It's snowing right now. Forecast looks fine for tomorrow...but... I may have trouble even getting to the start point if the roads are covered in snow in the morning. So... will let you know but I'm not hopeful :(

weather is expected ti be the warmest day of the week, and by dressing correctly should be warm enough - wear a few layers as far better than just one warm item, keeps you warmer plus if get too warm easy to take a layer off and stay warm

  • Kelly

Not sure if I'm going to make this now, it might just be too cold for me!! I'll confirm in the morning.

Just an update: The walk will go ahead tomorrow, the weather forecast as you may well be aware, snow is forecasted for this evening and tonight.
Tomorrow (Saturday) the weather forecast is sunshine all day and warming up to 4 degrees, (doesnt sound warm but this week the average temp has been -1) As this is a local walk there shouldnt be any reason why we cant set of at the scheduled time of 10.30 am - I have planned to finish by a certain time and know some walkers need to get off for other activities later in the day, (such as getting back for children) plus we are meeting some members along the walk too, Please be on time and be ready to walk for 10.30am so we can set off and have a good day walking!!

    Thank you

      January 14, 2013

feel free to bring your dog along, but as mentioned on previous walks, dogs will have to be on a lead and at close control as we do have members that arent too keen on dogs,

Brian, you asked about how to get there by public transport...take a look at this site and you should be able to figure out the best options for you...
