Indian Summer in the Rhone Valley

As the weather is still summery, we will try to organise a last evening outdoor and have barbecue at the same time.

As it will take place at Anne and Parag's place, I thought we could focus on the birthplace region of Anne : the Rhone Valley. It is also the home of superb Syrahs (Cote Rotie, Hermitage), the most amazing Grenache blends (Chateauneuf du Pape, Rasteau, Gigondas,..) as well as some of the most exciting white wines in the South of France including the legendary Condrieu.

A meal will be included for an approximate cost of 5£/head (on top of the 20£/head for the wines) and similary to the classic evening held at Simon's, wines will be served to roughly match the food order : reds with BBQ, whites with the salads/currys, sweets with the desserts. You are welcome to bring a dish if you feel like it. Hope to see you all there (well, I mean the first 20).

Thanks everyone for coming. It was fun to have you all. Emmanuel, I enjoyed your tour around the Rhone valley. The revelation for me were the whites, especially the St Joseph and Condrieu. I'll have to pester Anne to think expand the horizons next time we're at the in-laws.

I loved your blog Sarah. I was sad to miss the wine night, as unlike you, I love lots of Rhones, but your blog almost made me feel like I was there trying them with you :-)

Thanks to all for your comments about this wonderful evening. Sarah, I really liked your report on your blog, very personnal and touching as opposed to mine which probably seemed a bit too technical and daunting. Anyway, it's great that we can produce a few lines so we can make these wine evenings memorable..

Great night... sorry for late comments. I really wanted to say I enjoyed all the wines, Anne & Parag were wonderful hosts. I particularly enjoyed the Saint Josef/Joseph? Your garden & candles were delightful - look forward to seeing you all again next time. Great to meet new people too.

I've put up a little blurb about it on my blog: http://foodbirdo.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/rhone-wine-night.html Thanks for the photos Anne and Parag, almost all of mine suggested we had been drinking in a cave. Thanks again Emmanuel, super wines and loads of new knowledge about the Rhone Valley.

Merci mille fois Anne & Parag for your wonderful hospitality, tasty nibbles & cheeses & your mémé's delicious chocolate cake! Merci Emmanuelle for introducing us to some lovely wines from North & South of the Rhône. There were some real treats - especially the Saint-Joseph, Condrieu & Hermitage whites and the Côte Rôti & Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds. Delightful company & a great evening!

Hi from sunny Croatia. I have been tasting some unusual wines this week. I hope that your evening went well. How about wines from unusual grapes as a future theme? xx Karen

Thanks to all for a great evening. Listening to the conversations, there was a lot of expertise & intellect around the table tonight, very interesting. A special thanks to Anne & Parag & their lovely home setting, great hosts. Thanks too to Emmanuel, who seems to always keep a good balance between mystery and vast knowledge of wine. Sorry I was not able to chat with everyone. Look forward to next meet. Simon.

Hi all, the evening will finally take place indoor with only light food (nibbles and some dessert at the end). To compensate for the cancelled BBQ in the garden, there will be an apertive outside followed by two wine tasting sessions in one : impressive reds & unknown whites of Rhone (and actually a third mini one with some sweet off mainstream sweet ones to go with chocolate pie). Here is the address :
136 radcliffe road, NG2 5HG. Best place to park is Mabel Grove the other side of the bridge. See you all there tomorrow around 7.45pm

  • Maria P.

was really looking forward to this but unfortunately just recovering from a stomach bug so think wine and rich food would not be a good idea !! Hope someone is waiting in the wings to take my place
Have a lovely evening and hope to see you all soon

Like Liz I'm sorry we cant make it tomorrow, especially as Rhone wines are one of my favourites. I hope it all goes well and that someone else is able to enjoy the event.

    September 11, 2014

Sorry for the short notice about pulling out from tomorrow's event but Doug & I have unexpected commitments. We hope someone can take our places.

I have 3 camping chairs, would you like me to bring them?...also, fingers crossed, last night was quite warm. I am sure it will be great. I am working a long shift on Friday but hoping to leave on time if we haven't got emergencies.

    September 11, 2014

  • Guillaume

Now Anne, you can be part of it !!! It would have been a real pleasure to see you all. See you next time.

    September 10, 2014

  • Anne V.

    let's be practical.
This is too cold to do the whole wine tasting outside and our room inside is too small for all of us to eat. Eating quickly outside is not how I imagine a cosy wine tasting and moving everything from outside to inside at some point is a bit complicated.
So we are going to have aperitif outside to start with. We will have some simple nibble (baguette and cheese type) - feel free to bring "easy to grab" something . And we can still happily nibble inside. I'll try to bake a chocolate cake, which is always welcome at some point of the evening.
Sorry for the bbq, we are happy to postpone it for a Sunday afternoon next September !
Personal message to ROB: we forgot a bright red wooden folding chair at your place last time. Could you please bring it -you shouldn't miss it, it's proper red. We will need it. Thanks!

Hi anne. I havent got any spare chairs. I think emmanuel took them home with him after the bordeaux tasting at my house. Sorry!

      September 10, 2014

  • Liz V.

We agree with Maria - happy to start outdoors & move in as necessary! Liz & Doug

    September 10, 2014

  • Maria P.

Happy to eat, happy to drink ! maybe start off outdoors then a quick retreat indoors as temp drops !

    September 9, 2014

  • Ann G.

I would prefer to go ahead with the BBQ....bring warm clothing and a blanket. I will bring a couscous salad with roasted vegetables and a dressing with a kick, if we go ahead with food.

    September 9, 2014

  • Rob S.

Like Simon I would prefer to have some food, just let us know so I can grab something to eat before I come out if I need to. Personally I'm happy to wear a coat and stay outside. We're hardy folk in these parts you know! 10 t0 15 degrees sounds perfect.

    September 9, 2014

  • Simon J.

I personally do like to have something in my tummy besides wine. I put myself down for the evening because it was asvertised as a barbecue with wine. I am quite happy to bring some food for all to share or a pack of sandwiches. I am quite happy to go with the flow, but need to know what is decided before the event if that's OK?

    September 9, 2014

  • Emmanuel

Newbies, the address will be provided, as usual the day before the event !! We do not send the address earlier so we reduce the exposure of the hosts to random wine drinking visitors... So just wait, and by thursday you will have the full address.

    September 9, 2014

  • SarahMcD

Good thinking Emmanuel. I couldn't make the dinner bit anyway so no food is fine by me. Will you be sending on the address for Anne and Parag's place?

    September 9, 2014

  • Emmanuel

Hi all, I reckon we have a bit optimistic regarding the weather at this time of the year in Nottingham.. I have been checking the temperature outside the last few evenings and it turns out that it is dark and cold after 8pm. We could provide candle lighting but i am afraid we cannot do much concerning the chilly temperatures (between 10 and 15 degrees) when sat outdoor drinking alcohol, except turn up with blankets and anoraks (and all look like a bunch of refugees..) So I am considering having a only a light dinner or no food at all, and do the wine evening entirely indoor..Let me know your thoughts on this matter.

    September 9, 2014

    • Sandrine

Hi..i personally will need some food..no problem doing it inside and perhaps try a drink outside..i don't mind bringing some food . Just let me know...also, to echo Guy's comment..this is my first wine tasting meet-up and i am struggling with the address.

      September 9, 2014

  • Guy

Good afternoon, I'm excited about attending my first meet-up with this group but am struggling to determine the exact location. I'm reasonably familiar with Lady Bay but am having trouble with the linked map to generate a precise address. Also, do I need to 'print ticket'? as indicated at the top of the invite? Regards, Guy

  • SarahMcD

Hi Emmanuel and all you lovely wine fans,
I'll be there; I may be a little late as I am on restaurant reviewing duty early evening - and as such I will not be partaking in the BBQ.
I'm shortly going to be posting about a small tasting event, numbers are really limited so you'll need to be quick!
    Sarah

Hi all, with 7 days to go, it looks like we have a full house. Actually so full that the hosts are on the waiting list !! If you are unsure of coming, as we often have some last minute drop out, can you let me know. Also as usual, I will request the newbies to send me a confirmation email to block their seats for the evening. In addition, there will be a BBQ done there with various things for veggies and non-veggies but contributions are welcome : salads, side dishes, desserts, etc.. The theme is the Rhone Valley which is almost Mediteranean food isn't, so anything that goes nicely with nice weather will be fine? Send me a mail so we do not all bring the same stuff. Cheers and see you next friday
