Publisher's book description:

A poignant and inspirational love story set in Burma, The Art of Hearing Heartbeats spans the decades between the 1950s and the present. When a successful New York lawyer suddenly disappears without a trace, neither his wife nor his daughter Julia has any idea where he might be…until they find a love letter he wrote many years ago, to a Burmese woman they have never heard of. Intent on solving the mystery and coming to terms with her father’s past, Julia decides to travel to the village where the woman lived. There she uncovers a tale of unimaginable hardship, resilience, and passion that will reaffirm the reader’s belief in the power of love to move mountains.

Overall, we didn't give the novel high ratings. However, we agreed there are passages of high literary quality that make it worth reading.

It was really nice to see my novel-lovin' friends, again. Too much time had passed since I'd been in the good company of fellow bookworms.

I really enjoyed myself today! This meeting seemed really relaxed and open. Maybe it was the good vibrations from Shawna home. Meanwhile, Donna Tartt had a novel published in 2002, The Little Friend, there were mixed reviews. I think we all might enjoy The Secret History, sometime .

We disagreed about the book, which never stops us from having a stupendous discussion.

From the author video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRWCpCkcc_8&feature=youtu.be:

"I didn't have this story in my head when I started, but I had it in my heart... Slowly the story was told to me, and I just had to write it down."

I won't be able to attend because I leave on vacation the next day and will be stuck at my desk trying to meet a work deadline before I go. Have fun!
