The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes

  • Feb 23, 2014 · 2:00 PM
  • Gail's house

Description from Amazon:
"Winner of the 2011 Man Booker Prize. By an acclaimed writer at the height of his powers, The Sense of an Ending (link goes to Amazon) ... follows a middle-aged man as he contends with a past he has never much thought about—until his closest childhood friends return with a vengeance, one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present. Tony Webster thought he’d left all this behind as he built a life for himself, and by now his marriage and family and career have fallen into an amicable divorce and retirement. But he is then presented with a mysterious legacy that obliges him to reconsider a variety of things he thought he’d understood all along, and to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world."

We read this book in June 2012, and you voted to bring back this novel. We'll read it again -- or for the first time -- and discuss it.

We're meeting at Gail's house in Santa Rosa. The address will be emailed a day or two before the meeting to those who RSVP yes.

I liked this book even more after the lively discussion!

Two great discussions in a row. Loved Peter's "journal entry" from Veronica's perspective, and loved that the group was equally divided on almost every topic. Looking forward to next month!

Thanks! I was a little worried I might get laughed out of the room for that little exercise in creative writing...

It was nice meeting everyone and I enjoyed the discussion.

And once again, many thanks to Joan and Gail.

    Great discussion, thank you.

Many apologies to all. I did not cancel my RSVP because I fully intended to come and enjoy the discussion (after reading the book twice). I'll attribute my missing you to "renovation brain" - being at Home Depot - for the 1001st time - and totally forgetting until we got home and were prepping lunch after 2 p.m. Please excuse me. Best to all - Patti

I emailed Gail's address at 10:10 am Friday, 2/21 to those who RSVPed yes. If you RSVP after that, email me directly -- [masked] -- to get the address.

Please check that your RSVP is current. As of 2/12, we have a huge group signed up. Remember that your RSVP is a commitment, not a maybe -- please, no more no-shows. RSVP only for yourself, no guests -- we may need to cap attendance, and members get priority. Thank you!

I really wish I could attend this as I had many questions about this book the moment I finished it. does anyone take any notes or minutes of the discussions? I work overnight at a treatment facility in Yountville (live in Santa Rosa) and must sleep past 2pm. My questions were mostly about motivations and actions I found curious, at best, by one of the main characters. Anyway, I hope to attend another time. I have read that Atkinson's "Life After Life" was brilliant. Ann Patchett's "State Of Wonder" was breathtaking to me. After finishing the final word of the final page I actually gasped. I also will be reading Gaiman's "The Ocean At The End Of The Lane" in this upcoming new year. Hope to see you all at a meet-up soon.

Ptery, I wish you could come! Even if you come for the second hour and slide into the discussion at that point, you'd be welcome.
