Tenth of December by George Saunders

Tenth of December by George Saunders was on every literary "best of 2013" list and received rave reviews from critics. It is a collection of short stories, not a novel and not linked stories, with common themes and a unique style. Link to Amazon

Note from Joan: When I first picked up this book, I read 1-1/2 stories and put it down. I thought I hated it. Then I read a review that a friend and writing colleague wrote -- http://www.wickedlocal.com/x1433775207/NORTH-SHORE-BOOK-NOTES-Tenth-of-December-By-George-Saunders -- and thought I'd better give it another chance. I'm glad I did! This book will give us much food for discussion.

    Hi Folks,
    I cannot seem to find the email with the address for today's meeting. Could someone send it to me privately? [masked] Many thanks.

      Thanks to Nancy, I'm all set now.

    I have an iPad mini for sale (see http://www.meetup.com/Novel-Lov...) -- I'll bring it to the meeting if you'd like to see it. I'll bring it with my apps on it so you can see it in action, and if you want to buy it, I'll need to take it home first to restore it to factory default settings so it will be all yours.

    Here's our plan:

    1. We concentrate on these 4 stories for detailed discussion for the first hour:
    * Victory Lap
    * Escape from Spiderhead
    * The Semplica Girl Diaries
    * Tenth of December

    2. After break, we spend the remainder of the second hour discussing the book as a whole -- the style, uniqueness, recurring themes, use of dialogue/ monologue, why this book is beloved of critics, and whether we agree.

    I just sent this out as an email to the attendees, also.

    My eBook has an interesting conversation between David Sedaris and George Saunders at the end. Does the print book have that, too?

      Please email me privately from your real email address to [masked]. I've sent the address twice to you, so there's something interfering. Did you read to the end of the last two?

    I liked the interview and Saunders articulation in that forum better than the short story writing!

      Love this book, he is terrific i haven't finish the book yet i will by Sunday

      May 15

  • Linda H.

    I will not have the book finished by Sunday so I changed my RSVP to "no". I didn't like the book enough to stay with it, actually found it annoying.
    Joan, I think like you I will need to return to it another time and try again.

    I'm loving Saunders pitch, tempo, and his terrific irony. I regret that I won't be able to make it by 2:00 and reluctantly RSVP'd "No." Please let me know what your next pick will be.

    I will be there, I will also bring a small folding chair, although I don't mind sitting on the floor as well.

    I've had to close this meeting to new RSVPs because we're over what Patti's house can accommodate. I'm emailing those who already RSVPed to encourage them to check that their commitment is current. I'll open. If the number falls below 15, I'll re-open RSVPs. If you want to be on the waiting list, email me or post here to let me know.

    This is a commencement address given by George Saunders that I found incredibly wise and moving. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

      Love this! I think his philosophy here helps us understand the characters in his stories, too. "What I regret most in my life are failures of kindness." Yep.

    We had discussed scheduling this book a long time ago, when reviews were popping up all over, but it wasn't available in paperback yet. Now it is.
