Dirty Love by Andre Dubus III

Dirty Love by Andre Dubus III [link to Amazon] is a book of four linked novellas about love -- how people crave and lose love, sometimes out of their own self-sabotage, or because they're derailed by their back story or their loved ones' actions.

Although the novellas can stand alone, they are linked by recurring characters -- a minor character seen for just a moment in one novella becomes the main character in another.

Stimulating conversation and agree with Lisa about the vitality of discussion. I'm still quite new but it seemed to me this time that there were more excursions away from the book itself and into more general philosophy. I love the many perspectives and the density of discussion. It was a large group and Joan did a great job of keeping us on topic as well as making space for folks who hadn't had a chance to speak. I would have liked to hear more of those quiet voices, not that they didn't try! The exuberance of the group can be quite a wave at times. I find that even if I don't care for a particular book, I've always appreciated the writing and certainly it's worth reading just to hear the many perspectives in the room. So glad Anne made the extra effort to accommodate everyone -- the hospitality was very gracious!

As always, a wonderfully animated conversation about the book. Whether you love it or hate it or have no opinion, you always come out feeling you've been enlightened.

I'm so bummed; I'm not feeling well and need to stay home today to take care of myself. I'll miss being there with all of you. Joan, thank you for bringing this book to our group.

I am changing my RSVP and won't be coming on Sunday. I have another interest, Israel/Palestine relations, and there are speakers at Quaker Meeting who will discuss the situation in Palestine. I will be with you in Oct as I am happily reading "The Gift of Rain" for a second time. Have a good meeting.

Good news -- Ann says we can let the rest of the wait list in. Hurray! No, she doesn't need extra chairs.

I am sick as well, something awful going thru my household. I am dropping out as well, so hopefully this will help with the wait list.

Just sent this email to those who RSVPed yes or are on the wait list:

If you RSVPed "yes," please check your calendar and make sure you're still able to attend. Since we have 6 people still on the wait list, let's make sure the "yes" list is accurate and up to date. If you can't attend after all, please change your RSVP to "no" and the first person on the wait list will be able to attend.

If the wait list doesn't get absorbed by people changing their RSVP, should we create a second meeting, maybe on Saturday Sept. 27? Then if some people switch to Saturday, we'll have room on Sunday for the rest, and everyone will be able to attend. Please email me directly if you think that an additional meeting is a good idea, and especially to volunteer your home to host it, if so! (I love this book, and I'd hate to leave out people who read want to discuss this book.)

I've heard from a couple of people who do NOT want an extra meeting, but are there some who do? This is the first time we've had a substantial wait list the week of the meeting.

Sad I can't make it on the 28th, but that will free up my spot. I wouldn't be able to meet on the 27th unfortunately.

Got tickets to see Mark Morris Friday... then had to change them to Sunday due to my husband's work schedule changing suddenly. So sorry I will miss this discussion.
    Thank you!

I just finished this book... I obsessively devoured it in two days! This one was by far my favorite!

I appreciate your planning ahead, but should we wait until we actually have a month when people truly miss out because there was not enough room? It seems like we've had a few times with high numbers - but then they drop off and it's manageable.

Good point. I'm taking my Mama Hen responsibilities too seriously for this early in the month!

Glad to have made it into the inner circle! Started reading "Dirty Love" yesterday. That man does have a way with words! Loving it so far. Looking forward to seeing you all again!

Interesting thought, Joan. However, I personally prefer that we keep it to one Sunday discussion instead of splitting it into two different groups over one weekend. It feels like this format keeps our group and discussions more grounded. And it always seems that with the # of people who drop for a variety of reasons, we end up with 15 or less which feels like a good size group.

If the RSVP + wait list numbers stay high, would you like to make this a double meeting? i.e. We could schedule one meeting Sat afternoon and the other Sun afternoon to accommodate everyone who wants to attend. Let me know if you'd be available to switch to Sat. if we need to do this. We'll also need a host. (This might not be necessary, but best to be prepared in case we still have a wait list as we get close to the meeting date.)

Just bought the book on my Nook -- hoping to finally get back to you all! Ironic, since summer's over and we're back in school... :)

    2 · August 26

  • Joan P.

Wow, a month to go, and we already have a waitlist. Don't worry if you need to put yourself on the waitlist -- RSVPs always change as the date gets closer.

  • Joan P.

From now on, I'm capping attendance at 15. If you try to RSVP after 15, you can put yourself on a waiting list to be notified when a spot is available. If you RSVP early and then realize that you can't come, please change your RSVP to make room for someone else. Thank you!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
