Our June book, which has been scheduled for a while, is The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes, a Man Booker winner. We’re meeting at Lynne’s house in Sebastopol. Get the address after you RSVP to that meeting at I’ll send out the address to everyone who RSVPed yes in a couple of weeks. If you RSVP later than that, please email me at [address removed] and ask for Lynne’s address.

Let's read Swamplandia! for July 22. We discussed this as one of the finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction that was not awarded. Several of you were interested in reading some of the finalists to award our own mini-Pulitzer.

We need a place to meet on July 22. If you can volunteer your home, we’ll bring you food (and leave some behind for you) and give you our fervent thanks. Please email me at [address removed] if you can host us on July 22.

At the last meeting, Laura was showing us some novels she is reading, among them a new Toni Morrison book. That led me to explore a few other Toni Morrison novels that are easily available in paperback. I just started reading Love, and I'm entranced. The language is stunning. OK if I schedule that as the August book?

August needs a date and a place. I know we all have different schedules, but if this meeting and this book are important to you and you can do either August 19 or 26 but not both, please email me at [address removed] and I’ll do my best to juggle the requests. If you volunteer to host us in August, YOU get the final word on which date we meet. Good inducement?

Speaking of RSVP:

Please make your RSVP real, and change it if your plans change. It’s fine if you have to change from yes to no even as late as the scheduled day. Just go to that meeting on the Novel Lovers site ( and change your RSVP, super simple. But please don’t RSVP yes and then not show up, which three people did last time. The host plans for enough seating and beverages, and it’s the right thing to let us know whether to expect you.

Thank you, all of you fabulous Novel Lovers who make our meeting a highlight of my month!
